intermediate exhaust smoke

Recommended Posts

So my '88 GL smokes. It did for as long as i can remember.. mostly when i was in 5th letting the engine slow me down and when i would press back on the gas it would puff.. just a little, but noticeable grayish white smoke in my rear-view mirror.

Recently, i removed my (rather crappy) exhaust muffler and installed just a strait pipe in the place of it. Now, it seems to be puffing a lot more.. at any point when i let the engine slow me down (except 1st and sometimes 2nd) then push back on the gas.. (and not even that hard down.. I'm not trying to run a hot rod or anything)

It seems its when I'm putting a load on the engine when it puffs.. just a little cloud then goes away and wont happen again until the same scenario comes up.

My question or really questions are

Is it possible that it has always done this before and my old muffler stopped most of it? it looks a lot more than it used to..

and what exactly should i look at?

I still have decent compression, she still pulls when i drive, no real lag (well.. sometimes it'll hesitate and stutter a bit on the road) and she doesn't smoke when I'm idle or even when I'm taking off from a light and going through the gears. Ideas?

edit: I'm not losing any (noticeable) oil or coolant, my gauges look good too.

The high vacuum created when the throttle is closed at higher rpms is pulling oil past the intake valve guides and/or oil rings. This oil burns off when you reopen the throttle.

With 270K,this is not surprising.

Hard to see how a muffler change would affect this, but, perhaps the reduced backpressure from the straight pipe is allowing the vacuum to go slightly higher than before.

Short of a rebuild, replacing the intake valve seals may help.
