Smell of fuel 1986 GL wagon.

Recommended Posts

My 1986 GL wagon sometime has a smell of gas fumes around the back where the tank is, usually after driving. I crawled under and did not see any wet spots or anything obvious. Before I go tearing into it too much, taking the tank down and all...is there a weak link or typical area where these develope leaks?

Thanks,

I'd stick my head up there and look for leaks while running, it might show itself. You say back of the car? Do they salt the roads there? Germany, MI. Wa. Il. Ky? Frankforts everywhere!

My '78 brat had that problem. I noticed a wet spot in the bottom of the rear quarter fender. I opened the panel and could see a small tube wet with gas. I just allowed it to vent to the outside. Probably not the professional way, but the smell went away. dp

Thanks everyone. That gives me several things I need to check and great information. I do appreciate it.

It is Frankfort Kentucky, bourbon capital of the world. And yes, they do salt the roads. The fill tube looked good but will give it all closer inspection. My vent tube on my old 78 Ramcharger was the culprit for the smell of fresh fumes on it.
