Any ideas on moddin an 87 gl sedan into a rally car?

Recommended Posts

I'm sixteen and just got myself a clean no problem 87 GL for my first ride It has 4wd and 5 speed manual. I'm wondering what mods i could do to get a bit more power out of that 1.8L. Any suggestions? I keep thinking I should break down and do the ej22 swap.

Hey renegadehobo... (love the name by the way)

PERSONALLY... since the GL is clean, i would keep it clean and use it as a daily driver and find a 2nd car to rally, especially if thats your only car.

Granted im from the midwest where a 20+ yr old car thats clean is about as much of a rarity as crapping out a diamond. out in your neck of the woods, not so much the case.

but the EJ swap would probably be way to go. or just find a early legacy sedan and rally that since you'll probably source parts from one anyways.

HOpe that helps!

jI'm with the person who suggested keeping the GL as a daily driver. But....in addition look for an early Impreza which already has an EJ18 or EJ22 which will run circles around a modded GL. Plus any future upgrades will be so much easier if you already start with an Impreza chassis. Watch craigslist and save your money and wait until you find what you're looking for; early Imprezas can be found in the $500 to $1500 range pretty easily.

Also, the person who suggested the Primitive Rally School had the right idea. It happens 4 or 5 times per year and will be happening this Memorial Day weekend. If you can get to Hillsboro, it'll give you the opportunity to see other cars, talk to drivers, talk to rallyists and help out with the event if you feel like it. I believe there is camping available at the fairgrounds so staying overnight might not be too expensive.

I have to totally agree! With clean examples of these getting more scarce, I would leave it as a clean daily driver and find something else to tear down and build as a trail runner.

Thanks for the input guys. I'll definitely keep a look out for those cheap Imprezas, hard to find any Subaru's at all in southern Oregon though. That rally school looks great, definitely going to volunteer next chance I get.

Crap, the injector went out today.

Watch your local craigslist; also the ebay/craigslist forum here on the USMB; I post every Impreza I see under $1000 as well as some really nice ones in the under $1800 price range (of course that's only Seattle area and sometimes Portland).
