Can the Master Power Window Control Be Fixed?

Recommended Posts

I have one that was taken out of my '86 GL wagon and replaced with another. The replacement one is blue and the one I took out is black. This is the whole harness assembly and control panel. Is there way to get it working in tip-top shape again? I'd prefer to get the original one in good shape and replace the blue one, which I'd pass on to someone else.

Haven't done so myself... But have read of members on here taking them apart and cleaning them to get them working again.

If, you have bad contacts in the switch(s), maybe taking parts out of the Blue one will get you fixed up.

the short answer is yes, but sometimes part of the plastic switch housing will be broken or melted, the little rollers stand inside breaks, then its no, but you can take them apart and clean all the contacts and put it back together, its necessary to assemble all the switches on the master at one time so its a bit tedious to do. just be sure to get the little rocker contacts turned correctly, they are not symetrical as they appear at first.

Yes, you can disassemble them and clean all the metal parts which may look burned or corroded. Like ruparts said, the plastic may be damaged; I just cleaned all 4 of my wagon's window switches and put some epoxy in the plastic bodies to reinforce them where they were cracking.

But... it didn't help much.

The relays or their wiring harnesses may be old and in need of repair. They're under the passenger seat and if you search for info about them, you'll find threads where people have fixed them with good results.

Hmmmm, sounds like a lot of effort for iffy results. I already have everything removed from the original factory installation, from when I had the replacement assembly installed. If I took pics & posted them here could you tell if I had everything already pulled that should be, in order to diagnose & repair (if that's even feasible)? I fdon't mean diagnose it it from the pics, just to know if I have everything in hand that needs looking at.
