Catching 2nd Gear

I noticed this on my outback that after driving for about 30 minutes. Not all the time but sometimes when shifting into 2nd the gear will catch and grind slightly. I spoke to my Subaru mechanic and he told that they have some luck using the Lucas tranny stuff to keep some gears from grinding. Anyone have any other experiences?

 

I have never had to drain a manual tranny before, do I just drain out the equal amount of fluid going in then add it back to it? Do I need to drive it easy or normal after adding the fluid?

When you drain drain all the fluid out check the drain plug and clean the plug off of metal shavings (it has a magnet on it to catch metals) once that is done replace the plug and fill the transmission up with GL-5 fluid to what's listed in the manual..

 

Also make sure the car is on level ground.

 

As for driving the car after the fluid change I went right on the highway came back home and checked to make sure I had no leaks.

So, just change the gear oil pretty much? I don't really want to do the Scotty's Cocktail as I have read a couple places where people have done it and the car started to whine.

Yeah just change the gear oil just make sure you get the right oil weight I can't remember what it is off the top of my head but your manual should have it.

Might be a little overkill for a lego, but I found the Red Line Gear Oil works FLAWLESSLY in my WRX. Bit pricey (about $50 for amount needed) but well worth it for it's performance.

+1 on the Red line 75W90ns. Have it in my '95 Legacy and it's great stuff.

I have the same thing in 3rd when the trans is warmed up. I just try to shift a little slower and it doesn't do it. Thinking about using 75w140 synthetic gear oil. I have Amsoil 75w90 synthetic in it right now which cured the crunch into 2nd in the cold.

 

Changing manual trans oil is pretty simple. Just like changing engine oil but without any filters to mess with. Drain old out, pour new in. Pick up a new aluminum Oring for the drain plug before you do the change.

Got a smoking good deal on some Royal Purple. I changed it tonight, hope this will help.

i highly recommend valvoline synpower gear oil. really smoothed things up on my legacy outback with 170k and easily goes into gear when it's super cold outside.
