Datsunrides
I have no real knowledge if it would work, but the easiest swap may be a diesel VW Vanagon motor? I think they made them diesel and if so, don't they swap in Subaru engines into them or something like that? If so, I would think you could "reverse engineer" the swap to put the Vanagon engine in the Brat? Anything else would require a lot of custom work do to being at minimum an inline 4 cylinder, which would be quite a bit longer and taller than the Subie motor. May be easier to just get a diesel Rabbit pickup. Mark
NoahDL88
I don't think the Vanagon ever had a horizontally opposed diesel engine. Edit, It came with an inline. I think your best bet would be a 1.9 diesel out of a rabbit, or other small VW cars. I won't bolt in and the fab would have to get creative, and I'm pretty sure the top of your engine will be sticking out of your hood.
nipper
Vw vanagon engine, a low profile in-line diesel, was never a reliable engine. I think avw diesel, and early model, has been fit to sooby's before. I wonder if the transmission can handle the torque from a diesel. The small engine from a Brat shold be fairly good on gas mileage. nipper
