outback_97
I did a writeup for adding map lights to the '02/'03 and I would assume '04 TS. For some reason Subaru forgot to install them in everyone's TS's Anyway, here it is, hope this is helpful to any TS owners out there: http://users.sisna.com/ignatius/subaru/mods/maplights/ Let me know what you think, thanks! avk
One can use a gen. 2 Legacy map light kit H4610AC000MS, it comes with instructions and a cutting template. It connects at the dome light. Subaru discounted these to $8, no idea if any are left.
outback_97
Thanks! If that works and they're still available, I'll incorporate that into the writeup. Steve
mtsmiths
as part of my deBrightonization program. Piece o' Cake. Also picked up a pair of lighted vanity mirror sunvisors from the Subaru site, for really cheap. Just as easy. Use the map lights lots, the vanity mirrors hardly ever, but I sleep much better knowing that they are there.
hklaine
Thanks for posting the part number. I ordered the part from my local dealer (though I hate doing business with them) for $10. I will post again once I get it installed. This is all on the condition that they manage to do something right and get the correct part in. -Heikki

Just curious whether it looks much different than the 2.5RS/WRX maplights. thanks, Kai EDIT: I really need to google these things first : http://www.ravensblade-impreza.com/brat/interior/maplight.html EDITed for new host:
avk
Kai: So you can see the light is the same as on gen. 2 Impreza, which is why it will fit. The only exception is that the WRX light has both pos. and neg. wires in the harness, while the "old" Legacy light is grounded through the mounting screws. Kaiser
Yeah, that's pretty damn nifty that they're the same size. Only difference I can tell (based on ravensblade's pics vs. Steve's) is the plastic is a slightly darker shade of grey on the Legacy maplight. subeman90
called my dealer.....gave them that part# and guess what? they say it doesn't exist... You folks out there think that light fixture might fit a 95 impreza??? Seems like they forgot to put one in there too. Matt
avk
A '95 Impreza wagon is where I installed the Legacy light, BUT there was no mounting bracket to be found. The bracket is a piece spot-welded to the windshield header rail and not sold separately. I had to salvage one from a '94 Impreza and glue it in place. All 1993-94 GC-GFs had the bracket, and I heard '95 (1st year) GMs too.
hklaine
Matt. It certainly exists, and as of last week was available from a warehouse. The dealer ordered mine and it came in as usual. The kit looks like this . If they can't seem to get one for you, and you are willing to pay a few bucks for UPS you can try this . It's not the most reliable resource in the world but after a few phone calls I was able to get a new-in-box fog light kit for my Legacy. The dealer only charged me $6.00 for UPS and since it is an obsolete kit sold it to me for $25.00. Just an idea. Sounds like your dealer is worse than mine! -Heikki
subeman90
I think my dealer is typical for new car dealers...."oh well not in the comp. screw it" Seems to be the latest trend anymore on my end. Thanks for the good info. folks. Not sure if I am going to go with the kit or still look for a 90-94 legacy in the boneyard for the one out of it (just because it is smaller). And I had a similiar experience -- one dealer didn't even call me back, but another couldn't have been more helpful and ordered it for that day. It's amazing how much variety there is in service levels. - Kai
Kaiser
EDIT: Hooked on Phonics worked for me! Ignore this post and read my next one. Originally posted by hklaine The kit looks like this . -Heikki Heikki, quick question for you. Per Ravensblade's pic above, it looks as if the maplight you got (and I hope to get today) doesn't have screwholes with which to attach it to the car, correct? In fact, there seems to be no backing whatsoever. That seems to be the major difference between that maplight and the one used in modern Impreza RS/WRX's: How did you attach yours? Ravensblade suggests "thin automotive trim double-sided tape." - Kai
Kaiser
Yeah so, nevermind the idiot behind the curtain. Ravensblade definitely hacked off the backing since mine looks like this. Best $8.56 I ever spent on a mod. w00t!
hklaine
If anyone would like a copy of the cutting template or installation sheet for the legacy map light kit it can be seen here: http://heikki.home.pipeline.com/autos/legacy/map_light_install/ Might prove usefull for people getting these lights out of junkyard cars (?). Is there a place to archive these? Steve feel free to grab them for your writeup. -Heikki
Kaiser
I just installed the maplight as well but on my girlfriend's 2004 Impreza TS. I thought I should copy something I posted over on NASIOC -- it's pertinent only for those of you who are NOT installing these in Legacys (as Subaru intended): Just finished installing the maplight in Sarah's TS and wanted to say outback_97's directions/pics were GREAT. Thanks Steve! One item to note if you're using the older Legacy maplight: if you use the template it comes with and line it up with the small ridge near the windshield (as the instructions say to do), you'll be off about a 1/4" inch. Specifically, if you cut based on the template, the hole in the headliner would be a 1/4" too far back (i.e., towards the back of car). If you use the template, adjust your pencil marks accordingly and remember the light was originally intended for late 90's Legacy...not a 2002-2004 Impreza. Had I trusted the template and cut the entire hole out to begin with, I would have ended up with a 1/4" gap between the light and headliner, which would have stunk. Thankfully, I started out small and in the middle of the template, so I was able to realize what was happening and make the correction mid-course. The good news is the right to left dimensions of the template were nearly spot on. - Kai EDIT: Illustrated here in case the above was confusing. My edits to Steve's pic are in blue. avk
I should have said that one has to properly position the template "by hand". For me it was the more time-consuming part of the project. One thing I did was to attach a length of masking tape between the mirror mount and the dome light and mark the roof centerline on it, then find the correct location along that line. hklaine
Maybe we shouldn't discuss these mods here so much Looks like 1stSubaruParts has "discounted" the map light kit from $6.00 to $19.95. Just thought that was funny. -Heikki
