That be an EA18 SPFI 1988 GL Wagon 5 speed DR Only been a Soobie owner for a few months and the Red Monster is pretty steady at 28+ mpg. Will the EJ22 match that or beat it? Might be better, but it's hard to get an excact figure cause I'm running 205/70/15 tires. And it's a bigger displacement engine:rolleyes: I'd say if you where really trying to squeeze MPG's go with an EJ18 from an Impreza. idosubaru Posted June 22, 2010 Share Posted June 22, 2010 driving conditions will make a big difference. i don't think everyone's experience would be the same EJ22 verses EJ18. tire size, weight, usage, towing, etc will vary. my EJ18 swapped legacy, i know it's still and EJ - but i went from EJ25 to EJ18 and here's the point: highway mileage is 22-35 mpg (with an automatic). 30+ in flat land. mileage decreases with weight (passengers), a/c, larger tires, mountains, etc. XT6 gets better hgwy gas mileage with larger tires and is consistent regardless of a/c, weight, towing, etc, i guess because it has the power to move them. if i did it over again i'd go with an Ej22 because of the mountain grades where i live. like Gloyale said the EJ18 would probably treat you right in an MT EA. but if you're pulling huge wheels, towing, mountains, weight, and interstate driving you might want to consider the EJ22. My unmodified Loyale will get 34mpg pretty consistantly but it is quite a bit slower. I've never done better than 32mpg with the ej swapped GL. dhise Posted July 8, 2010 Share Posted July 8, 2010 I'm thinking I found some ethanol free gas. Mileage is up 2-3mpg over what I normally always get running around town. These older models just aren't geared for freeway running. If I had a taller fifth gear I could get great mileage, but an ea82 needs the rpms to keep the power up. The ej doesn't have that problem! subynut Posted July 12, 2010 Share Posted July 12, 2010 Last trip to WCSS my bother got consistantly 28MPG till we hit Cali where the speed limit dropped to 55. Then it jumped to 35. That's with an EJ22 and the FT4WD 5 speed with stock tire height. Corse, around town he got low 20's due to his jack rabbit starts.:-\ My XT6 with FT4WD AT got 25ish around town and 30 out on the highway. My brother driving that same car - he's lucky to hit 20. We'll see what kind of mileage the 3L will get in my wagon when I get that working. Although it should be able to beat my F350. Link to comment Share on other sites More sharing options...
dhise Posted July 13, 2010 Share Posted July 13, 2010 yeah, something must have got cleaned out of my motor during that heat wave because the last tank was 35mpg but I was really trying to get good mileage. For the last 20k I've been driving it since it was swapped it never went north of 32. No complaints here! 35 is pretty good for a 4x4 vehicle!
