Location, Loctn, Lctn. Just were IS this EGR Solenoid?

Recommended Posts

Hi ALL!

I'de like to replace the nasty dead EGR solenoid that keeps my "Check Engine Lite" on! I've heard descriptions of it....were it should be, etc.!!! BUT I'm just not shure! So I took out my Handy, Dandy Digital Camera. Took some Pix's of my engine compartment! You HAVE to cut and paste these to see them! I can't "Hot-Link" them from this freebie server!

The first one looks like a round diaghram think, it doesn't seem to have electrical to it, it's on the back side of the engine, pass. side. The second is attached to the manifold, it's small, has electric to it. The third is just in the general area of the front of the engine, were the hose from the canister goto! It's real tough to figur this out from the pix's, lack of orientation!

Many thanks!!! Good luck!!! SubeeTed

While its true that the first pic is the EGR, my understanding is that you are looking for the EGR solenoid.

The thing in the second pic looks like an EGR solenoid, but its kinda hard to tell.. It Might be a purge control solenoid.. The only visible difference between the two are the connectors..

What you can do, is start at the EGR(the thing in the first pic) and follow the vacuum hose (also visible in the first pic) until you get to the solenoid..( it looks like the thing in the second pic)

Okay Ted, we are going to assume you checked the ECU for error codes and got the dreaded by some, found by many code 34

This indicates the EGR solenoid not the valve.

This solenoid controls the valve,

it's wires love to snap like a carrot right at the coil of the solenoid.

Follow the rubber hose connected to the canister in the first pict.

It will lead you to nirvana (i.e the EGR solenoid)

You can use an ohm meter to check it.

The coil resistance should be approx 35 ohms, it will probably show infinity.

Get a bone yard model, or try and repair the broken wires

or pay the piper.

now you have read it twice

Sure hope this helps

Follow Mr. Skip's directions...I just went thru all this with my car!

The EGR solenoid is buried underneath all the vacuum lines and other misc stuff...but following the vacuum line from the valve on the backside of the motor will lead you right to it. Should have a white connector for the wires - the black connector goes to the purge solenoid, and green goes to the thermo sensor (thanks go to Skip for my knowledge of those!!) There is also another vacuum line attached to the front of it that goes towards throttle body...

Good luck on finding a replacement. Be sure to check with a meter before you waste time pulling. Very common failure from what I understand.

What, do you unwind them? Do they usually go open in an accessible area? I never even thought of unwrapping one. I've replaced the wrapped-in thermal fuses on wall-warts, so I'm familiar with the idea.

For the OP: the PCS and EGR solenoids are mechanically identical, except for the wire connector, which can be swapped, and the electrical spec is close enough to work. I detailed this in this thread . And they are a very high failure rate item.

That's the EGR valve itself. Don't fool with that for now.

The second is attached to the manifold, it's small, has electric to it.

That's the Purge Control Solenoid. The EGR solenoid is directly to the front of the PCS solenoid, it looks identical to the one you've shown, except that it has the two wires in the connector oriented differently, so that you don't inadvertantly plug the engine harness connector for one into the other (which would make it run pretty oddly).

The third pic would show the EGR solenoid, if you removed the air intake plenum (the biggest rubber hose from the air cleaner/MAF to top of the throttle body) and the Idle Air Control bypass hose (the 3/4" hose from the plenum hose to the front of the throttle body).

Nope...and yes. That is what makes them easy to tell if they are repairable.

As Skip said, the wires tend to break off right at the entrance to the housing. If that is the case (which is most likely), they can usually be repaired. If the winding is burned open, forget it. The housing is molded to the guts and if you can get into it without destroying it, you are definitely my hero.

Cheers,
