ScottG
A bit more information from you will help board members get a better handle on your situation. If you'll answer the following, we can help you make some decisions about this rebuild: 1. How many miles on the engine? How many miles on the car, if the engine has already been changed?? 2. What kind of driving are you doing with this Subie? Every day driver? If so, how many miles per week are you planning to put on this car?? Is it just a weekend fun car?? What's the condition of the transmission? Is it manual or automatic?? How long do youn want this Subie to last?? 3. How much time do you have available to do a rebuild? How much are you planning to spend on the rebuild project?? How many Subie engines have you taken out of cars & taken apart?? Do you have any friends who have taken Subie engines out & rebuilt them?? 4. Do you have a garage or other protected place to work?? 5. Depending on your answers, it might be cheaper & easier to pick up a used engine & put it in your '94. Your answers will help board members give you the best possible advice. lone500
1. 230k miles on the car. dont know if it has the stock engine or anything. 2.this is my DD. manual tranny. its in pretty good condition. synchro for first gear is a little messed up but not that bad really. 2nd gear wants to whine a little bit sometimes. i want my subie to last forever 3.i would probably set aside roughly a week to do the rebuild. i just want to rebuild it. not exactly sure what that would cost in parts. never taken a boxer all the way out of a car before. i have helped take other engines out of other cars tho. and ya i have a friend who has worked on subarus for a long time so i could call him and ask him for advice. 4.ya i have a protected place to work where everything will stay dry. 5.im sure it would be EASIER to get a different engine to put in it. where exactly could i find a used engine? lone500
ah thanks for that website. didnt really find a used engine that is "Cheaper" than an engine rebuild.
johnceggleston
ah thanks for that website. didnt really find a used engine that is "Cheaper" than an engine rebuild. a timing belt kit on ebay with a water pump and tensioner is over 200$ (you will need to spend this money on the replace eng as well.) machine shop valve job is going to run $200?? if you are going to replace rings and crank bearings....... i think, you are going to spend a lot more than 400$ on parts before it is all done. but suit your self. lone500
ya i didnt think about the need to replace timing belt and water pump while im in there. ill look around and see what i can find. im pretty sure i could find a wrecked subie with a good engine sometime. it will fall into place when it will i agree in the end it would just be better to put in a new engine. ill just have to wait and see what comes up. thanks everyone!
