EJ20G in an RX?

I found someone willing to sell me what he calls a 1993 turbo legacy motor. I have 1987 RX coupe. I was wondering first, is this the EJ20g? or wich motor would this most likely be? Would this swap be hard? is the EJ20 wider or narrower than the EA? also, would the tranny mount right up or not....I was planing on just buying the motor and building it slowly until i need it. Thoughts anyone? I've also posted this same question on mysubie.com

Ej swaps are covered fairly well here and answer most of your questions. Have you tried searching any, should get lots of hits here?

Which motor will depend what country you're in - you might want to update your location so it's easier to answer questions.

EJ engines drop into an EA82 fairly easy...but there are some caveats depending on what EA and what EJ. EJ won't bolt up to an EA trans without an adapter plate. and of course nothing is plug and play about it so you need the entire wiring harness and ECU. there are instructions here on doing that or even folks that cut and label wiring for you.

Bram, Fury, Subarudave, and others are members that have done it. Bram and Fury have lots of information on their swaps at subaruxt.com and Subarudave has lots on here about his.

if you don't overheat it or blow the turbo they can rack up some high miles. but good luck doing that on and EA82 T:lol:

if you put a complete timing belt kit on it ($60 on ebay), new water pump and resealed the front of the motor you'll probably get another 50,000 miles out of it easily....if you keep it from overheating and running low on oil.

EA82T's are notorious for overheating and they usually do bad things to the motor really quick when they do - blown head gaskets or worse. at 20 years old there's a lot of hoses, clamps, turbo, radiator, thermostat, water pump, etc that can cause coolant loss. and they aren't really worth anything on the open market so few people want to put the necessary maintenance into them - like timing belts and water pumps, etc.

210,000 on my ea82t, original motor and trans. so you can get more life out of it. You just have to take care of it. The PO of mine did take care of it. I think I am the 3rd owner as well, so that helps. Like gary said, just take care of it with a reseal, keep the coolant in the car (harder than it seems at times :-\) and you *should* be able to hit 200,000 on the original motor.

If you were to do that, then you could build up another motor, have the harness and all that done, and you will have had the time to do it right. Gives you some time before swapping in a new motor, and time for research to make sure you do it right. No point in breaking something if it's just fine :) This is basically my plan with mine. Run it till it breaks, and hopefully before then line up the motor and all that jazz and have it ready to go in case something happens. Probably won't happen that way, but one can always hope
