I just got a job offer in California, and really wonder if I could take my 98 OBW there. From what I read on official web sites, it seems I'll just have to pay a 300 bucks fee+registration+smog check. On the other hand, I've heard some horror stories. Anyone had any experience with this? Any suggestions?

It's been discussed here on the board the joys of registering non-CA in CA. $300 in fees sounds right, it cost me $250 to re-register my salvaged Outback and that does NOT include brake and light nor SMOG. As for SMOG for you, as long as your car will pass Federal SMOG regulations, you are good to go provided it's not a CA car to begin with (sticker on underside of hood if I remember right). Good luck and come on over to Cali and enjoy the high prices:lol:

LOL, thanks.

Hope you don't have any check engine lights.

Nope, dealt with that in NY... I do move around quite a bit, hopefully not for much longer...

I have a friend who was originally going to move to Cali, but ended up in Arizona. While he was looking into registering his '98 Explorer from Pennsylvania to Cali, after he found out what was involved and the expense, he decided that if he moved to Cali, he would sell the Explorer here first. It just wasn't worth it.

Doesn't surprise me, this place is EXPENSIVE! I still don't understand how the CA government says we Californians can comfortably live off $600 a month (including expenses) when cheap arse hole in the wall places go for $150 a week. Honestly, if it wasn't for the fact that I have property here I'd be GONE. We are interesting people but unless you make $30k+ a year, you won't get ahead anywhere.
