bheinen74
decided to save another Subaru. this one is: 1998 Forester S, heated package 5pd with clean title front end damage. heres a pic shes got brand new Yokohama tires, no rust, heated seats, 5spd, etc. paid 500. air bags did not pop. it needs: fiexed.... -new radiator -used hood, passenger fender, grill, passenger headlight passenger foglight over, part of the airbox intake. did not get into timing belt, hope she runs great. Tires and wheels are going on my 94SS if they clear the wheel wells. i've always wanted a builder of this in a 5spd. dont like black, but eh. already have a few black hoods located, but no luck on black fenders. radiator barn is only 97 shipped on the radiator.....deal..... future plans-lift, DR, and the ej22t i got laying around. nobody has a lifted-turbo'd Forester around here, YET might bob the back to convert to a BRAT-ish like thingamabobber. The Dude Abides
You know, when i saw this add on craigslist i thought it was a joke. Clearly it was not. Nice fine brent. Dont know why you want to do all that stuff. Just fix the front and drive the sucker man. With the ground clearance youll get you wont need a plow. You can clear the snow in your driveway just fine. U thinkin of taking the brat back to stock.
subaru360
Good buy. I would just fix it and flip it for about $3-4k myself.
bheinen74
brought it home today. here it is. probably going to section in the front passenger upper rail, the main bottom frame rail is fine luckily. Wiring harness near ABS unit, is needing repaired. Got most of the side sheet metal pulled back today, tomorrow will work on seeing what can/can't be done on the upper rail. Ordered the radiator barn tonight so it should be in soon. Drove it up out of the back yard from the person who sold it, and up onto the trailer. Drove it off, and now am pushing it around, its bad to drive it with no coolant. Hopefully the pick n pull in KC still has the forester they had about 4 months ago. Can probably source all needed parts there for less than 200.

bheinen74
and, the vehicle was serviced by Ramsey. I hate ramsey, they NEVER do anything right. on the door jamb, is a sticker, from RAMSEY "the odometer was reset to zero at 62k miles. Please add this amount to what is shown on the odo to get accurate mileage. Warning, do not remove this tag it is a federal violation to do so" the odo shows about 70k now. ramsey sucks, they would not have to replace the odo if they new how to properly fix the speedo base where it screws into the trans, Both front axle boots on the inner sides are popped. I did find the window sticker, car sold for 24,660 in SD new. inside of car is like new, must have had seat covers for majority of its life. a few things to address besides the upper fender rail damage. Has a rust spot on A pillar and right above window, must have had a failed windshield replacment where they gouged the paint at some point, I have written threads on failed windhsield replacements before. rear wiper is most likely frozen up due to rust. Battery was heavily corroded on the pos term, and going to charge it to see how it takes. Missing a rear tailgate bump stopper rubber. does not have hitch, or lsd has cargo shade cover, has cargo liner plastic tray. Altimeter works, mileage showed 29.13 avg so it must have been doing okay. Edited July 12, 2010 by bheinen74

Mike yes. what else to you have. going to head to KC pick n pull this coming saturday?? they had a forester in there last time that had entirely everything this one needs...and that place is cheap, well fairly cheap. trying to keep the total for parts to 200 on this, exception is the new rediator from radiator barn for 97.13 shipped. mdjdc
I have the headlight/radiator support that I could cut out for you, but shipping would be kinda rough on that one. The marker light is really the last front end part I have left, unless you need the bumper minus the cover. The idiot I got it from cut that up, but the underneath is still good. Let me know what you need and make me an offer. Mike

bheinen74
radiator arrives tomorrow. upper fender frame rail is now about an inch from where its supposed to be. 5 wires were cut/pinched/broken from the mangle of sheetmetal. those wires are patched up. Will know more about the health of this once the radiator is in. Bumper has been patched so it is useable. keeping fingers crossed. My brother is going to get this, then his 99 Outback will go to dad for a winter beater, i think. probably going to KC pick n pull this weekend to try and get fender/hood/ whatever else. Need them both to finalize the beating on the upper rail into location.
bheinen74
update. Last night, installed new radiator. after charging battery up, the old terminals had been corroded. ran into a few things. The accident had bent both fan shrouds, but they have been straightened. Tested both fans before installing the radiator, they both turned on fine via direct connect to battery. the guy we got this from had pulled out the old radiator, and he did not know how to disconnect the fan connector, he had pulled the wiring out of the sockets on one harness plug. Filled radiator with rain-water to get a good flush since the overflow was all gunky when we got this (has been cleaned now) We guessed at how the 2 wires went for the fan connector. Startup was smooth, no strange noises, no piston slap, no rod knock. Brought vehicle up to temp on 4 jackstands, also testing AWD, yes all four wheels turn when in gear, so that seems fine. While running vehicle up to temp, checked out everything. Both rear license lights were burned out, fixed. ABS light was on, we had patched wires that the accident broke. I find ABS fuse, its blown. Turned off car, repalced fuse, restarted, ABS light out. Driver rear rotor is worn, caliper sticking, add new rotor to list. bearings are good. Once the fans kicked on, noticed what we were checking for. One side fan turned correctly, other side was opposite, so that has been corrected..we were kinda guessing they might not be right. All power options work, except the rear wiper, motor is froze still after soaking with pb blaster. radio has a clock. Up above on the headliner is another clcok, but that one does not work or show anything.????? power mirrors both work heated seats both work. front wipers work front and rear squirters work. all 6 factory speakers work Ran car with water for about 15 minutes. turned off. climbed under to look at heads-to-block. Looks good, dont think the HG's are leaking. Right side valve cover grommits leaking, possibly valve cover gasket. this should be a good one. headed to KC fingers crossed they still have the forester at u-pick-it. need headlight and fender and hood, bumper cover, and AC condensor, and a list of miscellaneous Subaru stuff. frame rail is close to where it needs to be based n a wooden template from the drivers side in mirror image. more to come. Tonight, fill with coolant, distilled water, and 1/2 bottle of Holtz. Should be on the road soon. Need to take on hour long interstate cruising to see how the temp guage is going...../HG check . Oh, and while it was running hooked in the OBDII code checker, guess what, no codes stored, no codes present. yippee. (subscribed) I like where you're thinking for this! A guy in another forum did a 98 Fozzy for $500, then cleaned it up NICE, did a second gen fozzy strut swap (got a lift), did ATs, AND blocks. LOOKS GOOD! Anyhoo, i like your idea of an EJ22T in a fozzy with 5MT.
WoodsWagon
Up above on the headliner is another clcok, but that one does not work or show anything.????? There's flat resistors soldered to the board in the clock that the solder cracks on. Pop the clock out of the console, take it out of it's housing (don't loose the buttons, they are loose in there, 3 buttons, 3 rubbers), and resolder the resistors. The most likely culprit is the "510" resistor by the upper corner of the display, but resolder all of the big flat resistors while you're there, because I've had others crack too. bheinen74
classic.. coolant bubbling into overflow.. no odd noises.. checked with the dealer it was last serviced at.. no records of headgaskets being replaced.. Dad is going to order the parts for headgasket job.. classic EJ25.. I told dad to yank it and replace with a ej22...... and be done..forever he doesnt like that idea..wants to proceed with headgaskets.. I told him the EJ25 is junk.. Yes... true...my brothers 99 outback is showing coolant useage and bubbles in the overflow too right now...I laugh at them in a way, but feel sorry. I continue to drive the snot out of my 94ss....love the fact of its headgasket design and 100% solid cooling. evil ej25 Edited August 4, 2010 by bheinen74
The Dude Abides
Correct me if im wrong sir, but if you replace the HGs with the new designed ones. Isnt that the end of your HG problems for the most part. And you must understand. The average person thinks replaceing the motor with one thats not really suspost to go in there is a silly idea. Isnt that the end of your HG problems for the most part. And you must understand. The average person thinks replaceing the motor with one thats not really suspost to go in there is a silly idea. even the updated one are only good for around 100k miles before they will fail too. The design of this bastard block, where the coolant passages are, and how they are so thin walled, is the problem. The design, even of the new gaskets, does not change how thin the area is.....and how easy it is to leak past the gasket. Subaru not at its best is all i can comment on really. I am going to take lots of pics of the process.
