jellyculligan
Hey there, This sounds like a ridiculous question, but I can't get a straight answer on whether mine is an AWD or 2 WD. I believe it's 2WD, I don't see any AWD indicator on the car, dont' ahve the official manual. My sube nut colleague says it HAS to be AWD because subaru didn't make a non AWD after the 80's but I"m not sure, because I'm seeing otherwise on the net for this model. I look in the rear under the car and didn't see a differential per se (if thats the wrong term I apologize), how can I for sure tell. The gear shift has this button on the handle that for the life of me I can't tell what good it does, other then light up the lamp that says Manual, but that only seems to be to indicate I shift from 1-D, which I could do anyway. Also there is a Power light next to that Manual light on the dash. It seems like a straight forward question and I'm leaning towards 2WD but is there a sure fire way to tell? Thanks folks, Kelly
Olnick
Your friend is wrong. Subaru made FWD (Front Wheel Drive) cars into at least the early '90s. Go to Joe Spitz's website, cars101, and look in the archives, the features will be described by model year. Look under your car again--if there's no driveshaft from the back of the transmission to a little pumpkin (the rear differential) between the rear wheels, then your car's FWD. Olnick
Just looked it up--'96 was the last year for FWD on a Legacy.

johnceggleston
also, the id plate on the driver side strut tower under the hood will have the transmission code number. if it reads TZ102Zxxxx, then it is AWD, if it reads TA102Axxxx it is FWD. you don't even need to get your knees dirty. porcupine73
Takes a peek under the rear end. Do you see a rear differential and drive axles on the rear wheels? If not, then she's FWD. The jack is under the rear diff:
