What style exhaust gaskets do you use on your EJ?

Recommended Posts

So I've had many problems with the standard autoshop ones I buy for my EA81, these are the two pieces of perforated stainless steel sandwiching a compound of some type.

My Outback's EJ25 needs some new exhaust gaskets and I don't want to put this type of gasket in there! I've read the factory 5 layer thick stainless steel ones are good but I just want a wider opinion base. I hope to not screw around with these gaskets again for a long time!

the stock Subaru OEM EJ25 exhaust manifold gaskets are great, they don't leak. if they do then something is wrong with the surfaces, exhaust, or installation. is there anything non-stock about that area of the vehicle you're talking about?

most annoying thing is the studs rusting, seizing, coming out, stripping etc - same exact issues there on the EJ's as the older EA/ER stuff.

I always reuse the old ones. If you are having a problem with them leaking its usually caused warpage in the y-pipe. One trick is spread "muffler mender" compund on the gasket surfaces. Wait for it to dry before starting. This will help fill the gaps

I'm assuming you're talking about the gasket between the engine and exhaust header, correct?

Yes.

Ok, sounds like the standard style ones are the way to go. I've found some on ebay, but I'll check with my local auto parts guy to see if he can get something similar first.
