blass001
Legacy 90' 4eat transmission gets stuck on first and lately it's been going on "limp mode" after I've been running it for awhile and its hot, only if turned off and then back on again. If I don't turn it off it works fine and if it cools down it works good too. Got repair done master kit and shift kit hoping that was the problem, but no luck. Mechanic still working on it for a month now. He can't figure out the problem. No Subaru dealer around my area wants to work with it.....I need help!! Markus56
replace tranny or go with a full rebuild at a reputable tranny shop.
blass001
I did get a full rebuild, my mechanic just finished still the same problem. He checked the sensors, computer, fuse, and I got a shift kit for the valve body, but still same problem.
Fuzpile
Sensors break down. Like spark plugs that test great but won't fire over compression. There is a sensor for AT temp which goes directly into the ecu. Why can't that stick when it gets old? Great one way or another but lagging like a bad thermostat. Fairtax4me
Electronics typically fail hot. I would suspect a shift solenoid, or TCM problem since it only does it when hot.
idosubaru
i'd invest some time in an FSM - they should be fairly explicit about what to do if you have limp mode and stuck in first gear. if the transmission light is ever blinking or the check engine light then you need those codes. have you ever seen any lights at all on the dash? if not, make sure they work. TPS is used in the shifting algorithm, not sure if that would cause your symptoms but the contacts in them do fail and get less responsive with age. this sounds fairly repeatable, something is sticking or something. Fairtax4me
How was it determined that the TCM is the problem? Just for future reference. Used TCM should be fine.

Olnick
Let's hope that you've discovered the source of your problem. Do you have a source for a new or used one in PR? Any salvage yards or pull-and-pays? Good luck--hope this gets you up and running again.
