A) are you sure you got a trans of the correct gear ratio?

B) Is it full of new fluid?

C) if yes to A and B, the new trans probably has worn side gear bearings and could be wearing the R+P gears.

That doesn't mean doom....just means it might get worse over time. Louder, but not likely to leave you stranded.

Jack one side of the car both front and back wheels off the ground. Put a mark/tape at 12 oclock and a mark on the fenders.

Then rotate the tires 10 revs, they should both still line up with the marks. If they are slightly off, go to the other tire and rotate them again after line up the marks.

Some slight slip in the viscous coupler can account for this slight change. If you have two different ratios, the marks will be way off.

You could also pull the rear section of the drive shaft and see if the wine goes away.

Open center diff.

Car will go nowhere if you pull the driveline.

thanks i dont know what my gear ratio is my diff dose not have the sticker so i do not have any clue how to find out what ratio it is and i really dont want to pull my diff:mad:
Check the VIN plate in the engine compartment for the original transmission number. Look up the number in the transmission listing found in the USRM and it'll give you the original rear diff ratio. Then check the number on the replacement transmission (found on the bell housing near the starter motor) and look up that transmission for the rear diff ratio.

Besides that, if you have the incorrect rear diff/transmission combination, you would certainly know it when driving. Whine is not one of the symptoms.

Your 96 Impreza likely came with a 3.900 rear diff. It's pretty likely that the replacement from a '95 Legacy is also a 3.900.
