So ive been lurking arround here for the past few weeks reading up on llifts and tires to gain more clearance but I dont think my 1997 2.2 ej22 would handle the crawling ive done in older modeled subies with the low gear setting. is there a tranny swap I can do or an LSD install? (I have no idea what im talking about) What are my options? Any oppions and or information would greatly be appreciated. thanks

I just hope Subaru of America monitors our posts on this terrific site.....that someday they give us a selectable fwd for the better fuel economy, and 4wd when needed, and dual range. But, I wont keep my hopes set too high on this, SOA sucks when it comes to what we want. For me, I could care less about huge power and creature comfort, they used to buld cars that got 30mpg, heck the 360 got 66mpg, Subaru, do it again show me your new car that beats mpg of my CRX

They did make an EJ push-button dual-range 4x4 in some countries, as seen here. Just for some reason they didn't send them to the states, like the standard Dual Range EJ box. Bit of a shame really.

Consumer demand is always going to win out. Subaru's these days are nice, safe, powerful, stable touring cars, because that's what the majority of the market wants. Long gone are the days of Subaru's being cheap cars to run - a lot like your aluminium-accordian CRX (no offence, thin metal on Honda's has always irked me). Even Hondas these days are just normal cars - they used to be lightweight over-powered playthings :)

Unfortunately for us, we get the raw end of the deal - which is why the majority of us are stuck with 20 year old cars - because we love them :D

hey! says someone who advertises heated leather seats in their brat! you, like many of us, are strongly opinionated and have a very specific taste in vehicles (yours being different than mine), even an appetite for novelty, which in some ways points to the creating of the very trends you don't like - it just happens that our opinions/novelties are the minority ones.

personally, i'm fine with that. the minute i start looking like the rest of americans i'll be very disappointed in myself!

yes you can put a dual range in your obs. I have one in mine :D Its almost exactly like an EJ swap in older subies but without the wiring since you are putting in an old trans instead of putting in a newer motor. I liked doing the trans swap in my OBS a lot more than the ej swap in my brat. but yes, with adapters these things can happen. and by looking at some of the cars on here... you can do whatever you could possibly want to a subaru with enough time and money

with a Adapter plate and redrilled frywheel and a modified tranny crossmember and a lengthened driveshaft you could install a EA82 Dual/range its been done a few times

where can I find specs on the adapter plate so i can waterjet one out. and when you say "modified tranny crossmember" does that mean drilling new hole mounts or cutting welding and fitting?

whats the overall length for the new driveshaft?

am I going to have to swap rear ends also, or are the ratios the same?

Lots of questions. Gonna look for some transmissions at the junk y

I dunno about specs but you can just drill holes in your stock cross member to accept the dual range trans mounts. I think the driveshaft has to be 55.5" to 57"? ish. I got mine from a legacy, made some brackets for the carrier bearing, and it fit alright. I would have liked a little longer but it has worked just fine so far. As far as I know your gear ratio is 3.9 so the rear end will be fine. Have you decided what you want to do with axles? The dual range front diff has 23 spline stubs, and your impreza has 25 splines. I swapped out diffs, some people have made custom axles.

Yeah, I saw your build thread on slcsubaru.com. That was pretty brave, cracking those trannys with no experience. But thats how sh** gets done! I really dont want to pay a mechanic to do it for me, whats the other option? ea82 axels? And you say the stock obs tranny crossmember can be drilled to mount the ea82 tranny? sweet.
