92 loyale no idle

Recommended Posts

My 92 loyale starts up and then dies. I might get a couple of seconds of juice if I feather the accel but then it dies. Checked codes and got 34 (egr solenoid stuck). Don't have the bux for a fresh solenoid and I'm relatively inexperienced w/ this. Any advice?

Your problem is Not your egr solenoid. That system has no bearing on the operation of your engine.

I'd be looking more in the direction of fuel supply. Initally, when you turn on your ignition, the fuel pump gets a burst of power from the ecu.(you should be able to hear your fuel pump cycle for a few seconds)That'l allow your engine to fire. And then after that, your fuel pump gets it's power from the alternator. Check the white, two prong plug that's pluged into the back of your alternator.Make sure everything is Ok there.

this just isn't true. Fuel pump and Alternator don't have any connection. The ECU switches on the FP relay, and then will only keep it running if it sees a signal from the disty.....which if the car runs at all....it's getting.

ALL the power for the fuel pump comes from the Fuel pump relay. If his car starts and runs....that isn't the problem.

I am gonna say it's a MAF issue or a Vacuum issue.

Check all the vacuum lines.....check all the PCV lines....make sure nothing is unhooked.

Could it be a very clogged fuel filter that lets pressure seep through enough to have some to start on, but insufficient flow to keep it running? Have you checked the fuel filter under the back rear of the car? cnc

I swear I have read that more than once here on the board. Doh!

Checked the alternator and it read 13.75, so I'm pretty sure there's no problem there. Right before the car died I was getting small(read not head gasket volume) puffs of white smoke from exhaust on accel. Also located and checked resistance on egr solenoid which was 0.00 ohms compared to 45~ I got from a different solenoid. Also checked all the tubes I could find for holes and looseness with no luck. Not the vacuum diaphragm on the side of the transaxel either.

Just ruled out the fuel filter. Interestingly enough when I pulled the egr solenoid out the engine actually reved better than w/ the solenoid in. I think it runs rich w/ no vacuum but I'm not sure. Also wanted to say thanks to everybody who threw out ideas, its helped me a lot.

  • 1 year later...

I have this same thing going on on a car right now, It seems to be a Fuel Pump relay, only problem is Where the hell is it, the one Im working on is a 91 but everything is the same as what was going on in the first post......... just need the location on the fuel pump for a 91 Loyal book says its under the Drivers seat but I dont want to have to tear the carpet up if I dont have to..............

The fuel pump relay is under the dash, between the ECU and the heater core area. The pump itself is on the passenger side of the car, on a little shelf in front of the gas tank.

For the record, an EA82 will run fine without the alternator (well, until the battery dies). It will also run without the battery if the alternator is hooked up (though it won't start without a battery or jump). At least the SPFI model, I haven't tried the MPFI in these mix-ups.

Perhaps it's an issue with the fuel pump circuit when the key is in the 'run' position. If the car starts and the pump pressurizes the fuel line, but then cuts out due to a circuit issue, the motor would die a few seconds later after the gas pressure drops...possible? Not sure how the pump is wired. Somewhere in the ignition circuitry something may be going on.
