turbo5speedgl
I have an 86 hatchback with the metal case electric fan but is it better then the slim black plastic fan. it gets hot right now with the one so I put the black one on but doesnt come on but it works with direct power just want to run the best fan out of the two cuz I heard the 50 amp alt shouldnt be running two fans. rpholz
no clue on which one is better but i run two metal case fans on my 86 XT with stock alt and no issues. BUT those with misc. electrical stuff AND my subwoofer proved to be an issue at idle

If it wasn't made to run it, why would Subaru put two fans in? The slim black fan is for cars with ac and is kinda just a helper. If you don't have AC, I believe the black fan will probably never come on. I would just install a cabin switch for the black fan and run it when neccesary. If the car is overheating, the main metal case fan may not be turning on. If this is the case, your thermo-switch may be shot. I would just bypass that as well and install your main fan on the same switch as the auxiliary fan. If you do this, you need to make sure your switch is at least 15 amp, if not 20 amp to handle the 12 amp regular draw plus spikes. turbo5speedgl
ok the metal one is on a switch and is always on but still gets hot so i'll try and run both at all times.

I don't think you mentioned it, but have you checked your coolant? It sounds like you're running low on coolant. Also, did you wire up your fan to be a puller rather than a pusher? If you got your polarity wrong on the fan it could be trying to push air instead of pulling it through the radiator. Twitch
turbo5speedgl
coolant is good and i'll check the fan rotation as i didnt wire it i got it like that.
turbo5speedgl
I added a another fan and changed my distributor timing and now it doesnt get hot so i dont even need the other fan now i just need to figure out why it gets bad gas mileage and to see if it will pass emissions now.
