Thinking about changing valve cover gaskets on my ej18 (and cleaning oil passages)

valve cover gaskets are easy, just have a 10 mm ratcheting wrench available, takes all the frustration out of that job.

 

Awww, but that takes all the fun out of it...

 

As for cleaning your oil passages, I highly recommend using a quart of ATF in

place of a quart of oil on your next oil change or running seafoam in the oil for

5-10 minutes before you do your next oil change.

 

There are many write-ups on how to use seafoam, just do a quick search using

the keyword "seafoam" and you'll get plenty.

PS: Make sure you clean your valve covers immaculately otherwise you could

end up with a leak.

Thank you guys! Would you recommend the ATF or Seafoam first? Also, have you ever taken the rockers off to clean the oil passage? Any pics?

 

It's a tick that is off and on randomly at any RPM. Seems like it's slow enough to be one rocker...

In your case I'd go for the ATF first, as it seems your problem is just from lots

of wear and may need some minor cleaning.

250k is up there for just about any EJ.

Plus the additives in the ATF would probably be good for your seals where as

seafoam tends to be hard on those.

If you're taking it apart, I would definitely snake the oil passages you can access. There was a note on endwrench about ticking on some engine that was attributed to a plugged passage there. I snaked mine with a piece of 14 ga bare copper wire (not sure if that was a good idea to use that or not).
