Looking to build the simplest engine to replace my EA82

I was looking for a replacement for my tired leaky 200k ea82 and was trying to compile data to build the simplest ea series engine for my 85 wagon. I was thinking EA81, Weber Carb Conversion, handbuilt header, and eliminating any emmissions. I was wondering if anyone knew anymore ways to simplify my build as well as make a little more power. are there any ways to increase compression, maybe convert over to a points style distributor, just the basics really, I've never gotten to the subaru engines, just volkswagen and nissan. any Ideas, Parts for sale or parts to look for?

EJ22, basically bullet proof, but tis alot of work my friend, you would basically need to find a donor car,engine,tranny,ECU etc. But probably worth it in the long run.

use ea71 pistons in the ea81 block, go for a cam, do the custom header. it would be neat to see someone build a custom intake the same.

you can even make a carb ej22 with the right imported parts

for a homemade intake check out the aircraft hobbyists. I saw a good how to write up on baking a carbon fiber intake there. RAM engines may have some links.

for go the EJ22 and go with a EJ18 if you want easy and simple. the EJ18 has less than half the wiring that the EJ22 has.
