Allpar Mod
While putting on a new belt and repairing the tensioner for the a/c, I discovered, much to my chagrin, that the clutch is toast. It works fine at idle but as soon as it starts spinning faster, it sparks, smokes, and stalls. Fortunately, the compressor seems to be working ok. Now I know why the belt got glazed and stretched. Here's the rub. Nobody seems to sell just the clutch assembly. Subaru will..at a cost of over $200 for just the clutch!! The entire compressor assembly with a clutch is anywhere from high $300s aftermarket to nearly $600 from Subaru. Help!!
Olnick
Maybe look for a clutch/compressor at a pull-and-pay or salvage yard and chance 'um?
Allpar Mod
I called All Foreign and they'll give me the whole thing for $35. Risky but that may be my only option right now.
subaru360
Not really that risky. Subaru AC compressors rarely fail.
Scoobywagon
All I will say about it is this.... It has been my observation that, in the past, when I've replaced just the clutch, the compressor fails within 6 months. This is why we just don't do clutch only in my shop. In the end, its a waste of time and money.
