will a 1999 and 2001 subaru forester engine swap direct?? i have an 01 that lost a rod and found a 99 eng,but wanted to know if it will work 1st thanks tom

as long as they are both SOHC they will swap. but some engines 00 - 04 had slight differences so hang on to your cam and crank sprockets until you get it running.

was your 01 a head gasket / overheating engine??

This is a trend I have been noticing with foresters. 99+ are throwing rods without any HG issues...I have replaced three and seen many more. Any ideas why this might be happening?
it's not just a forester issue - it's EJ25's. i've seen a bunch too and have some for scrap. a guess is that prior to having head gaskets replaced (common on EJ25's), the running hot affects either the metal or oil which degrades the bearings. not substantially, but enough that over time they fail.

I've had issues with a 99 Forester. Took 3 engines to get a good one. A 99 forester SOHC was bad, a 2000 Legacy SOHC, also bad, finally a 2001 Legacy SOHC.

If you think the timing belt you have for the 99 is impossible to install on the Legacy engine this is exactly what happened to me - and they call for a different timing belt. IIR the one for the 99 SOHC is smaller and when I couldn't get it on I called the parts store and the Legacy engine actually took a different belt.

I swapped intakes, for some reason I believe motor mounts, etc.

they gave you a phase I 2.2 belt.

All Phase II SOHC engines use the same belt (except maybe late VVT models)
