adam87amp
I have a 97 OBW 5 spd that i picked up due to blown head gaskets All I have done Heads machined new valves/adjusted upper gasket kit water pump flywheel machined new clutch new vacuum lines new radiator new transmission new motor mounts new transmission mounts new rear struts new rims and tires new knock sensor new ect the problem I am having now is that the car runs great and shifts great for about a half hour. After it is up to temp for around a half hour like i said the clutch/whole car shudders/chatters when you are leaving a dead stop (1st gear). The rpms can be cranked up and clutch feathered, but i know that will toast the clutch. Does anyone have any suggestions? Or did i just buy a junk clutch from advanced auto parts? lmdew
May be the clutch, or the trans. Are you sure the front and rear diff ratios are the same? Trans properly serviced? Clutch is properly releasing (I take it you have the HYD clutch not the cable)? The Throwout bearing retaining clips were in good condition and installed? Just some thoughts. outbackusjunkus
The trans output shaft that the throwout bearing slides on is alumminum, and wears down over time. The gap there creates chatter, they sell a tube that goes over the shaft along with an oversize throwout bearing that fixes this, but they are kind of spendy. Could be that... adam87amp
The gear ratios were check and every thing checked ok throw out bearing clips are in good shape throw out is snug on input shaft (just not to snug) don't know the maintance on the trans before I got it but ( since then it is taken care of) a local friend recomended checking the rear diff and making sure there is plenty of gear lube :-\
987687
The clutch shudder is usually from a weak pressure plate or crappy clutch disk. Or oil on the clutch disk. This could happen if the back of the engine is leaking, rear main or separator.
logic23
Yeah a chattering clutch is almost always attributed to the pressure plate or clutch disk. Where was your clutch kit from? The autozone/advanced ones are complete chinese garbage. Are you in canton OH?
foxgap
I have the same problem with my clutch. Weddes is going to put in a new Exedy on Monday. They say the same thing, cheap clutch disc making it chatter. This morning it was REAL bad, it shook the entire drivetrain before I feathered the clutch. While they are in there I want the seperator checked and rear main along with the imput shaft. The hillholder is going to be hooked back up also. That thing is great here in hilly country. adam87amp
Yeah the clutch is from advanced auto parts. I have experience clutch chatter from junk ones when its cold, but never after its been warmed up for a half hour or so (almost un drivable). I just kind of reach for strings now, its really starting to be aggravating. yes I am in canton ohio
logic23
Cool if you are in columbus look me up. My shop is downtown. The Advanced clutches are the worst. I have had to take out two and replace them with the Exedy Kit. They sell the Exedy kit thru Car Quest. Its the same as the oem clutch. The Adavanced clutch used to be good. I hadn't bought one for a couple years but during that time the manufacturer started having the kits made in china. The problem with them is the springs in the clutch disk are junk and the metal in the disk is weak. I had to take one out a week later and one of the springs had almost ripped out of the disk....bad news. Just take it back they should give you a refund. foxgap
Got my car back last night. New Exeday clutch installed and ALL shudder is gone. The previos owner must have been real rough on the pedal cause the old clutch was just about down to the rivets after only 24K on it. Clutch cost was about $180.00 from Keystone and $300.00 labor at Weddes. I'm happy just to be able to drive it agin without it sounding like the drivetrain is falling out. adam87amp
well you are and were right logic23, spring ripped out of the plate. unfortunately i had already bought a new clutch and trans, so i spent money I didn't need to but it shifts like a dream now. I will never buy another advanced auto parts clutch again!
