Engine and tranny dimensions for EA to EJ swap to calculate prop shaft length

I just measured the EJ engine and transmission (5-sp manual):

ENGINE

Distance from bolt center of engine mount to bell housing transmission mating surface is est. 65 mm

TRANSMISSION

Distance from bell housing engine mating surface to end of transmission is est. 810 mm

As my EA81 engine and tranny are still in the car making taking accurate measurements rather awkward, I would appreciate it if someone, who has a spare engine and 4-sp tranny laying around, could measure the same distances of the EA81 parts.

I need the info so I can calculate how much the prop shaft needs to be lengtehened.

Thanks!

Well, my understanding (never done it, so correct me if I'm wrong) but an EA82 driveshaft will fit in an EA81 (non-hatch) with an EA82 transmission without being modified for length.

I had 2 inches taken out of my Ea82 shaft to work with an EJ transmission, and it was perfect. it doesn't need to be exact, as long as you err on the short side (too long is bad. but too short, probably even as much as in inch short, would be fine for the slip yoke and seal. although depending on how much power your making will depend on how much spline engagement is acceptable).

also, be careful about how you take your measurements. I found that the dust shield around that slip yoke to be different lengths on an EA82 trans vs an EJ one, so the end of the transmission isn't necessarily an accurate representation of the end of the output shaft. I ended up using the front half of a driveshaft, and measuring from the mating surface on the transmission to the flange on the driveshaft.

So I finally got around to remove the tranny from my EA81. Measurements:

EA81 TRANSMISSION

Distance from bell housing engine mating surface to end of transmission is est. 970 mm (measured from end of dust cap to bell housing).

Distance from bell housing to centre line of axle stubs is est. 150 mm.

Distance from bell housing to centre line of mounting hole for gear lever is est. 860 mm (don't know what position the rod was in, neutral, 3rd or 4th )

Distance from bell housing to EA81 transmission mount bolts is est. 470 mm.

EA81 ENGINE

If forgot to measure before I sold the engine, so if anyone with a spare engine would care to measure the distance from bell housing to centre of engine mount bolts...

EA81 ENGINE

Distance from bolt center of engine mount to bell housing transmission mating surface is est. 80 mm

EJ TRANS

Distance from bell housing to centre line of axle stubs is est. 165 mm.

This and all of the above means, that the distance for EA81 driveline from engine mount slot in the subframe right to the transmission axle stub is 230 mm, identical to the EJ-driveline.

So only the difference in transmission length must be compensated for by a longer prop shaft, which should be extended by 175 mm for all EA81 cars except the 2-door hatch.
