high performance EJ22 builds?

I have an EJ22 it's a little aged but it runs a bit better than the current resident in my RX. I've been reading about the "Frankinmotor" and I have been wondering... is there a way to get good N/A power out of the 2.2 and still have it be a bit rev happy?

 

I have been paying attention and I want to run a few ideas by everyone...

 

Phase 2 block

Phase 1 heads

Delta power grind cams

I am not sure what the final compression will be. I think if the higher angle of the valves in the Phase 2 heads coupled with the flat top pistons gives 10:1 then the lower angle of the Phase 1 heads will bump it up a little more possibly closer to 10.5 or even 11:1.

 

I have built Datsuns in the past but these Suby motors I get confused as to what fits what. like will the 6 bolt block mate up with a 4 bolt trans and the like.

The 4 bolt transmission bolts up fine to a 8 bolt block, just with half the quantity of fasteners :grin:

 

Using the Phase 1 heads on a block with Phase II pistons, compression ratio will go up by 1.5 point (assuming Phase 2 heads are 49cc and Phase 1 heads are 40cc).

 

Using the thicker composite 1.4 mm Phase 1 gasket (Phase 2 gasket is 0.8 mm MLS but coolant pattern does not match Phase I head) will lower the compression ratio by 0.7 point.

 

So using the Phase 2 block with everything else Phase 1 will give a compression ratio of about 10.8 (if my assumption is right that the Phase 2 Ej22 has a 10.0:1 CR).

I'm assuming you've read and re-read everything in the NA forum at NABISCO. If not, there's a "power white paper", and the frankenmotor thread, while 14 pages long, will give you a lot of information on an EJ22 build as well. Spending the time to read it before you commit would probably be wise, even if you go the 2.2-only route.

 

In order to use the power cams to their fullest, you'd need an expensive port and polish (which Delta does also, I believe). I'm not sure how much you'd get out of them with stock heads. There's some talk over on NABISCO about the torque cams being more favorable for most people, and you know my opinion, but the choice is thine.

I have read the white paper and gone so far as to print it out for reference.

 

The plan at this point is to get the RX running so I can finish out the season. This means a freshened stock phase 1 2.2 will be going in. I will continue to hunt for either a 2.5 block or a phase 2 2.2 to build into a hi comp screamer. This car will race again before the season is over.

How much time do you have before the next race?

 

Also, the NA power white paper isn't the bible of Subaru NA performance. It doesn't include everything, and some of the stuff in there is widely regarded as a waste of space. It helped me put things into perspective, though. It was about the same money for cams as it was for, say, a lightweight pulley and grounding kit. I opted for cams based partly on the gains mentioned in that thread.

my next race is October 9th it will be a struggle but I think I may just make it. I am still waiting for a couple parts to send off for Scott to work on but I think it will all come together soon.

 

 

 

BTW can someone tell me what the two bolts on the bottom of the block on either side of the crank are for? they look like they were intended for banjo fittings and an oil cooler.

My biggest wait was on the wiring harness. If you have that sorted, then best of luck to you.

 

Those bolts remained unused for my EJ swap, so I'm not sure what they were intended for.
