EA Radiator Reconditioning

Recommended Posts

Did a bit of searching, and didn't find what I was looking for.

The rad in my 87 RX is the original, and has seen better days. I am sure it's clogged pretty well. I don't really wanna throw a new one at her just yet, so I was thinking I could clean this one up, and try and make it last the winter.

What have ya guys done to get the sludge out? Is there some OTC products that do a flush that works well? Can ya fill it with some vinegar, and water and let it sit, then flush? Some kinda home cocktail that's proven effective?

Thanks in advance for your time.

distillers - machines that distill water - have some kind of cleaner with them you use once a month or so to remove the residual stuff left after boiling off water. it works really well actually, no scrubbing or anything.

i would guess radiator cleaning products are equally equipped but i'd think there's something out there that will work.

although 20 year old radiators are usually in bad shape. places like radiatorbarn.com, etc often have them really cheap. pretty sure the EA82 turbo radiator i bought years ago was only $80 shipped to my door.

might be able to find a used one from a yard or board member in better shape than yours too.

Careful when "flushing" radiator, you might break some gunk loose and have a bigger problem then before, I have heard that it can hurt the radiator and I have heard it works amazing, I think prestone has a rad flush product....I would just b extremely careful

Yeah I don't really take this car out of town. I just don't like driving the WRX, or the RS in the snow, so I keep her on the road. Plus ya just can't beat the low range locking diff!

Yeah I will try the prestone product, as I've heard mention of it a few times before. The rad isn't in too bad of shape, just clogged no doubt. Just trying to keep the ol boat anchor running cool till I can do a EJ swap some day.

Thanks for the fast response fellas! Any more ideas, keep them coming.

kinda different problem but if you do break something loose when flushing it...

I actually had a leak in my ea-82 when I first got it and I used "Cadillac Tabs" from the GM dealer and I haven't had 1 problem since.....

Okay I must admit ya lost me, what's a Cadillac Tab?

just some little tab/pill product. its a nickname for them, its kinda like a compressed power tab...if that doesn't make things worse:grin: but don't worry about them unless you get a leak.....
