DustinL
Hey oh bank of knowledge, So I'm in need of a new transmission for the 78 Brat with an EA 71 engine. Does any one know if a 81 GL EA 81 Transmission will mount up in the brat. If so what do I need to do to get this to work? Any help would be awsome! GeneralDisorder
No - EA81's are side-starter and your EA71 is a top starter. The bell-housings are completely incompatible and will not bolt up. GD

GD Thanks for the info I have been trying to find out if there is any way around the side vs. top starter on the bell housing issue so far I haven't really found anything other than buying a different engine with it. Does anyone know what else is different with the transmission are the axle splines, length compatible with the front end or do I need shorten and or lengthen drive shaft and or axles? GeneralDisorder
All the 4 speed's are the same except the bell-housing - if you go to a 5 speed you will have to lengthen the driveline and build a custom mount/cross member.
