Broken Shifter Cable AT 2000 Legacy GT

Recommended Posts

I have 2000 Legacy GT w/AT. Trying to start car, transmission lock was preventing me from shifting into Drive, after overiding lock I was able to put it into drive. However, afer driving a few minutes I shifted down to 2 and then 1.

Bad move, tranny wouldn't let me come back up. In fact could not put it into neutral reverse or anything. Had to drive 15 miles in first gear. At home, stopped car turned off engine. Now it wont start because its still in first gear.

The shifter arm felt loose and I suspect the cable or something else may be broken or loose. Any ideas?

Dont have manual or pics or anything so its hard to know where I'm going. Does anyone have a diagram of shifter and linkages underneath?

I read on another forum about a guy who went under the hood to shift manually by moving a lever. How can I get the car to a garage?

Thanks

RD

Check in the car first. The center console is easy to remove so you can rule that out before crawling under the car.

Open the flip lid, remove the two screws at the front and the rear section pops up. The front section just pops off then there are 4 screws that hold the shifter assembly in place.

Checking the cable under the car is a bit more difficult. I can email you the section of the FSM (or the whole FSM) if you want.

Passenger side of the transmission, you will see the linkage coming down.

There a clip that holds the cable on to the transmission, remove it and then see if the cable moves. If the shifter is still locked up, its in the shifter/cable.

If the cable is OK try shifting the transmission by hand, car OFF so you don't run yourself over.

Thanks for the replies....much appreciated....my main problem is that the car is sitting in the middle of no where (in my yard) getting into the garage to work on it would be my first move...

I just want to get it into my garage, so I need to start it it's about 150 ft away but on soft soil....

I still need to remove the shifter from inside the car. Just four bolts left

This cable is not that obvious. Under the hood, on the passenger side what looks to be like the end of a cable but its attached to the cabin bulkhead with a bracket. I can make out the right wheel drive axel coming out of the transmission. Other than that...

Probably will need to buy manual...

I have no idea why you think it is under the hood or why you are going to remove the shifter. On no subaru is it under the hood. It is a short cable UNDER the car between the tranny and the shifter. It is serviced UNDER the car. I would just get it up on jackstands with the stands on thick and long planks, or get some freinds together and push.

I have a dirt driveway I have done both when I have had to, and no garage.
