I am considering buying my first Subaru soon..

Recommended Posts

Once I sell my current vehicle, I am planning on buying a Subaru. I've decided this for various reasons, most of which involve having 4WD but still being able to get good fuel economy.

I am going back and forth between going with one of the EA engines and one of the EJ.. this is going to be my daily driver, I am going to be driving it on the interstate and would like to not be too terribly slow compared to most traffic.. would it make a whole lot of difference to go with the EJ rather than EA engine?

Mostly asking because I love the body style of the 77-84 wagon, with the round chrome gas cap... and I don't really have the equipment to do an engine swap to put an EJ in one of those.

So, any help would be appreciated! thanks guys..

If you like the designs of those, those are EA engines and from what Ive been told, are running about 74 horsepower... Now my EA81 in my 1984 DL Sedan moves, Ive gone 0-40 faster than my girlfriends 06 Pontiac Vibe. Hasnt been up to 60 yet as I have expired tags and like to keep it in the neighborhood

For speed on the highway, youll want the EJ22... From Rick (GeneralDisorder) Ive heard that the 1990-1994 Legacy is an INCREDIBLE car, very reliable, and stock, very quick.

Never had one, but want one badly...

The swaps can be kinda messy (again, from other peoples knowledge, not my own) but if you find one already done, you might have what youre looking for...

But for just stock, want to go from point a-point b reliably and quickly, go with an EJ22

If I were doing a lot of interstate driving I would get an EJ car, the early Legacys are pretty much bullet proof as 92_rugby_subie has already stated, they go forever. I too love the old wagons, I own an 1982 but the are not good interstate cars, they are slow and aren't geared correctly for modern-day traffic with the stock 4 speed.
