yes it is an interference motor

2.5 sohc--2001forester s aotomatic--red

anyway, few months back replace airconditioner belt it was ************ty and i thoought the compressor was on its way out turns out it was the tensioner pulley cuz ir broke while my wife was driveing and wrapped around fan locking motor up causing it to jump time and bend the valves --an interference motor thing?--paid 1300 for another motor and had local garage put it in---

yes i do know and trust mechanic--he saiad motor runs great and went in very easy but now tranny will not work-- they took it to specialist and they replaced something --still no luck --now they just did something else ,i am not sure what hopefully it will work if not even mechanic is baffled he or i have not ever seen this happen this way and i want to know if anyone here has or has an answer-- i am asking everywhere and nobody seems to knoe---

My guess is that they FUBAR'd the auto tranny pump.

Didn't get the torque converter seated correctly and "pulled it together" with the engine to trans bolts.

If that's the case now you need a new tranny.

Bummer.

hopefully they actually tested the motor before replacing it but that's water under the bridge now. phase I EJ25's are easily repairable when they have bent valves, there's no piston damage. i think Phase II's are the same.

as to the transmission there's nothing that should have caused the transmission any issues when the engine failed. engine stopping does not affect the transmission. it's quite common for an engine to throw a rod, lock up, lose a bearing, break a timing belt, lock up the cams...etc - any number of catastrophic failures that lock up the motor. that is irrelevant to the transmission.

so davebugs could be right and they mis-installed the new engine and cracked the oil pump inside the transmission. if you don't properly seat the torque converter when reinstalling the engine that's what happens and it's only a 1/4" difference so there's no way to know visually speaking unless you're very familiar with the exact motor/trans you're working on. unfortunately that's not easily replaceable, most folks just replace the transmission.

they should check for ATF pressure, if this guess is right then there won't be much/any fuild moving.

for a better diagnosis let us know exactly what it's doing.

Also if they used the tranny pan to jack up the tranny to help align it to the engine instead of using a bottle jack on the diff section they may have busted a solenoid. I did this once, on accident when the jack slip off the diff...Tranny would not work and CEL was on. Pulled codes, drop tranny pan and sure enough there was a solenoid that the housing was cracked as plain as day. Replaced broken solenoid and put everything back together, it all worked fine and still is. Thats when I started using a bottle jack.

i believe it was a solenoid-- any way they fixed it --so far since yesterday it runs great- with the exception of a small leak from tranny witch they will fix-

my wife picked the car up so i still have to talk to them to find out exactly what went wrong--------------thanks all
