Dirk
I was wondering if there is a way to channel air into a carburetor by using some sort of air scoop. Could this be done without channeling bugs and bad weather in there too? would it help increase engine power? cheers Dirk.

Ummm, I would not waste my hard earned money on those gimmicks. The only thing those do is help the acceleration of cash out of your wallet! I was wondering if there is a way to channel air into a carburetor by using some sort of air scoop. I guess you could somehow run a tube from the grille area to the stock air cleaner nozzle. This will net you a cold air intake and a slight "ram air" effect at highway speeds. Could this be done without channeling bugs and bad weather in there too? Sure, it's called an air filter. would it help increase engine power? You may see a couple HP for your trouble Mark

soobenthusiast
On another forum I'm on there is a Ford Probe track car that has a ram air intake under the front. They get 5 psi at 70 mph. http://forums.probetalk.com/showthread.php?s=&threadid=1701047435 Edited October 10, 2010 by soobenthusiast found the link
Dirk
Cool! The thing that still bothers me though is still the rain and bugs and dirt being directed straight at the air filter. Maybe ok for a track car but not so handy for a daily driver.
Datsunrides
Just built a shroud around wherever you place your intake or simply angle the tube off horizontal. This will deflect the rain and bugs for the most part. Mark
maudsland
Well the rain would be good to cool the charge under the high boost you might experiance, regards to the bugs i hear that the juice from the bugs are high in octaine so it should prevent more detonation. soobenthusiast
Actually, I think that she says the water and bugs are not a problem, as there is a filter and the water would have to go up a couple feet to get in the motor. But I think I would also be wondering about it for daily driver duty.
NoahDL88
I put a super duper dryer hose cold air intake on my escort in highschool, 3 months later the car wouldn't run for nothin, had issues at high rpm high load and would only really putter around. Turns out the cold air intake did a fabulous job of funneling a whole bunch of road debris, bugs, rocks and leaves to the air filter and clogged it. As has been said, gimmicks are only good if you're the one making the money off them, a properly tuned engine will get you more power than those gimmicks. Ram air does work, at high speeds if you do it right and have a big scoop and a good frontal pressure area to get a pressure buildup from. Is it worth it? not for my time or money. I wasn't really looking forward to cutting a hole in the hood anyway. Nice to know it works though.
