I never bothered to look up the autos. what this sounds like in the OP's case is just as the others are describing you are not getting full throttle. On the carby models there is lots to check but your description doesn't mention falling on it's face so we'll rule out a plugged jet and focus on linkage. also check your floor mats they can limit throttle pedal travel. with a low powered car you need to get all the throttle travel you can. I did some weight reduction to the dash by removing the stock AM/FM radio. However it got added back with a Sony head unit and 6x9s. I don't think its the carpet. I'll have to check on the rest when I get some light tomorrow. I did notice there is a bit of oil leaking (very slow - few drops from over night) from the valve covers.
