'95 Legacy Outback Transmission Rebuild

Recommended Posts

It's time to get into the manual transaxle on my '95 Legacy Outback (I'm the original owner 280K miles) Does anyone make or offer a rebuild kit? (Seals, syncros etc) It has started leaking gear oil and will not stay in 4th gear, 1-2 shift has been sketchy ever since my oldest daughter brought it back from college when she was using it a few years ago. Would like the convenience of a kit, don't really want to go to the dealer and order a bunch of individual parts. Thanks for any help. Greg

There are no kits that I know of.

I ussually tear it apart, inspect and replace bearings that need it. New seals everywhere. Syncros you can just have lightly bead blasted and they will work again.

4th gear popping out means you definately need the Upper shaft rear support bearing.

Is the upper shaft, the pinion drive shaft or the main shaft?

+1, for a used transmission. they don't fail enough to warrant a rebuild for me.

save your old one or at least remove the rear extension housing with the center differential. if you get torque bind then you can swap that, doesn't require trans removal to swap either.
