jagris Posted November 6, 2010 Share Posted November 6, 2010 (edited) So I'm doing my head gaskets on my ea82t and found three of the lifter seats are up a little more than the others. On one head they are all fully seated and they all just plopped out. The other has one full seated which came out easy and three that are up, one of which came out and the other two are stuck. Do I need to be worried about this? Lifters are going to be rebuilt. I tried to hit it with a rubber mallet but was to scared to really smack it. Any ideas? Should i even worry about this? Thanks. ruparts Posted November 6, 2010 Share Posted November 6, 2010 hi, i think he is talking about the " sleeve " for the lifters, if they are loose enough to slip in and out of the head they might rotate to a position that the oil port is blocked , that would be a problem if it did occur. the lifters really don't move up and down once installed but if the sleeve rotated they might not get oil . my thought is make sure the sleeve's oil holes are aligned properly with the oil passage and they are all the way down in the bore, then stake the top edge so they cannot rotate. maybe someone else has had this before , i have not noticed it on the ones i worked on . NorthWet Posted November 7, 2010 Share Posted November 7, 2010 I might still be concerned and pursue this a bit. Seems to me that if they are raised than it is likely to affect the HLA's working. My understanding is that when a reground cam is used that the HLA's might need shims to reset the clearance within range. Rasised seats might cause clearance to be incorrect. jagris Posted November 7, 2010 Author Share Posted November 7, 2010 I've been thinking about it all day. The ones where the sleeve is up a little it seems as though the hole for oil is fully open. The ones depressed I can see metal as though half the hole is open. They are really in there and don't move. There was a lot of "ticking" coming from the head that has three sleeves up. I'm really trying to figure out if I should bang them back in or try and find a way to pull them out a little. You think that they should all be same. When I rebuilt my EA82 and put rebuilt lifters in, I noticed that the two inner sleeves on both heads were sticking out a little further than the 2 on the ends (just like one of yours).
