Twitch de la Brat
Ok, I've been putting in my shiny new XT6 clutch for my 5sp d/r swapped BRAT, but have come across a serious dilemma. When I pulled the engine forward my passenger side motor mount fell off. Unfortunately only half of it fell off :-/ Guess I found my mystery vibration... Anyway, does anybody know of any direct swap motor mounts that are cheaper and easier to source? Because it seems EA81 mounts are made of some rare form of gold rubber and take forever to make. My parts guy at NAPA had nothing for me for an EA81 and my Oreilly's guy had them, but they were a week out and would run me over 50 bucks a pop. So does anybody know if I can fit a different style in the without much hassle? I'd much rather put a style that didn't rely solely on the rubber to stay attached. So say if the rubber failed it would still hold. I've seen some for an (please don't flame me for this, I am sickened enough saying it) *gag* EVO 9 and that was a tube inside a tube design. Now this being said, if the rubber ever fails, the engine would stay in place, make a hell of a racket, but stay in place. And I would be able to re-sleeve the inner portion in watever bushing material I please, making fixing them in the future a lot cheaper and rosier. Now after being long winded and confusing, back to my basic question. Does anyone know of any easy replacement motor mounts for an EA81? GeneralDisorder
You could just hard-mount it. Rubber is squishy and fails - and it's for nancy-boy's that can't handle a little vibration . With a little clever work you can likley use any EA or EJ mount. They are all pretty similar. I think EA82 mounts are the same or very similar if you just swap some brackets around. Did you check rockauto? GD
Twitch de la Brat
Ok, I haven't checked rockauto as I haven't had access to a computer (yes I've been posting from my phone) but I will soon. I did read of a guy who modded EJ motor mounts to fit, but I don't really have a set of those hanging around to mod as I please. I'll see if Buick Regal mounts will work :-p My dad has a LOT of those hanging around... Twitch
renob123
I got some from Rockauto for substantially less than $50. It's on my list of best no-brainer things to do to a Brat. Jacob

I'm working on seeing if just drilling through and running a bolt with bushings on each end would work. It may make a little vibration, but at least I know that sucker isn't going anywhere. coxy
What we used to do is similar to what the Evo runs for our Rally Escorts but the tube setup was a rear Leaf spring rubber from a Ford transit van in a steel tube and then 2 simple plates and a through bolt setup on the cross member side. The steel tube is mounted on the engine with the Spring shackle rubber insert and when lowered into the corresponding mount on the cross member and bolt inserted only metal failure or weld failure can result in movement. Unlike solid mounts it still allows some vibration damping but keeps things more secure and fail safe rubber wise. This type of mount is known in Escort land as a "World Cup" style mount and also works great for Transmission mounts.

Sonicfrog
I modified EA82 mounts to fit my EA81 I'm having a hard time finding EA 81 motor mounts and need one. What did you have to do to get the EA 82 one to fit???
stiwanabe
Im having the same issue. Look for motor and trans mounts. I thought my 86 EA81 used the same mounts as 84+85 but all the catalogs are showing otherwise...

I thought my 86 EA81 used the same mounts as 84+85 but all the catalogs are showing otherwise... Your car should match everything for 84. 85 on the other hand will be a mix of EA82 and EA81 stuff because the wagons, sedans and coupes switched to the EA82 body style. If the catalog says your BRAT doesn't match stuff for 84, I wouldn't trust it and would find a different source, because they obviously don't know what they're talking about. I haven't gotten a chance to solve my problem, but the cheap temp solution is to drill straight through the old mount and crossmember and run a bolt through it. It may vibrate more, but it will keep your engine from racking the hood as you drive. Twitch
Uberoo
I have a similar idea on how to fix mine.I plan to cut off the studs from the mount then drill all the way through and run a big bolt through the entire thing. the studs are M10x1.25 right?
