Im goin to be takin the auto tranny out and installing a 4 speed d/r tranny. I have the parts car to take everything off I need. Can someone help with that. Also It has spark but no gas. We changed relays and wired the pump direct but the injectors arnt firing. Im thinkin its the computer(ecm)??? What do you guys think? And thanks for all your help
naru
Probably not the ecm. They are quite robust. That said,I run one w/a failed fuel pump driver.LOL. Does the ECS light on the dash come on? Got power at the injectors? Shielded ignition signal wire connected to coil -? Fusible links good? You can read trouble codes off of the ECM led by removing a trim panel under the drivers knees and connecting the green? test connectors IIRC. Welcome to the board. True2Blue
Check your Grounds:)
GeneralDisorder
Yep - grounds and power supplies. Probably not the ECU. Ignition is handled by a seperate unit on the EA81T's - so I would say your ECU is missing power or ground, etc. GD
skishop69
+1 And, if you're going to swap to a manual (which is a given considering a turbo automatic is utterly worthless...) you should get hold of an EA82 5spd d/r and swap that instead of the 4 speed. So worth it, especially with the turbo.
bratclay
My father n law has a parts car. Its a 84 gl wagon wit the 4speed d/r. I gave him my auto for his tranny. Im taken the rear end and tranny. I wish I could find a 5speed. I would much rather have the 5speed. If I know someone around my area to trade that would be sweet. As far as the car goes. I checked the injectors wit my tester. They have power on both wires of the plug. I then tried turnin it ovr and seein if one side would pluse but nothin. They just showed power nevr flashed the tester. For like a signal also I know when the key is on and you plug the injector back in it just come on for a second but mine dont. Im not sure what grounds or power wires would be off. I havent seen or found any. I also remember when I had my 07 sti bout the green test wires. I tried those on my brat and the ecm didnt lite up or the dash lite esc come on. Not to say that the bulb on the dash isnt out. IM KINDA CONFUSED LOL Thats one reason that makes me think that the ecm is bad cuz I dont get any lite outta it. Again thanks for everyones help. naru
Find the 9 pin red check connector under the dash.Look for power on the white/black wire w/key on to confirm the ignition relay operation.
bratclay
Thnx I will try that as soon as I get hm. naru
Check the ECM ground by putting your voltmeter between the black/red wire in #8 position in the same connector and battery ground.Note the reading w/key on and while cranking.Any significant voltages indicates a bad ground. Ohmmeter in the same position should read 0 ohms w/key off. If all else fails, pull the ECM plug and look for battery voltage at pin 26 red. Test the ECS light by grounding pin 29 red/blue. bratclay
OK i tryed the connecter thing. And well I got power to the wire if the plug is unconnected to ecm then when I connect it, it barely lits up the tester. So I pulld ecm out and took cover off to look inside and there is one spot that looks burnd but not sure
naru
Look for corrosion etc.at the green fusible link near the battery. Measure the voltage on both sides w/ecm plugged in.
Mugs
ok thnx. I can hear it clickin on and off as I turn the key. So I thought it was ok. But Ill try changin that too. Thnx Ya I thought that too, but only to discover it was the relay next to it clicking, and it also made it feel like the ign relay was clicking. bratclay
I was wondering if anyone could help me. First ? is what is the differences in ecu's. I have a 420897110 was the difference between that and a 420897210???? Can I use a 7210? Thnx Second, Im goin to install a 4speed d/r tranny and rearend. Im goin to have the clutch rebuilt, so my question is I have a clutch out of the car rite now from a 92 loyale 5speed. Can I have that clutch rebuilt and use it? My question I guess is their a difference in clutchs in a 4speed d/r tranny and a 5 speed s/r tranny?? Thanks guys for all your help.
naru
7110 is for 83 turbos. 7210 for 84 federal turbos. 7210 incorporates a high altitude switch and supports trouble code 41. According to Subaru,"the connector terminal arrangement has been altered". Likely not completely plug and play, but, not a big difference either. GeneralDisorder
I let him know that I have an '84 FSM he can borrow (since I doubt his ECU is bad) - I just haven't had any time at all to drive out and take a look at it. I have my hands full with broken cars and projects. GD
bratclay
Thanks GD. Just a little update on brat project. I will be installing the tranny next week. I am having a clutch made. It goin to have kevlar disc with stronger springs. I also had the flywheel and pressure plate resurfaced. Oh and I definitely get pics of new clutch. Ill just have to figure out how to post them on here. That should be done mid next week then I can install tranny. Im goin to try and make the lift blocks this weekend and get them installed. So I was hoping to maybe get GD out next weekend with his ecm and check my brat out so that I can get it runing and start driving it.
