so i put the ej22 in the 98 outback. bolt everything up, and fire it up. woohoo, it runs. :banana:

 

but it has an exhaust leak. i track it down to the driver side manifold gasket so i pick up a replacement and stick it in. still has an exhaust leak. so i look harder.

 

I FOUND IT. i don't know what you call it, but the 'staple' shaped tube that comes off of the intake (EGR?) and goes down in to the rear of the head, driver side, IS MISSING. :eek:

 

i can't believe i didn't catch it before i put the motor in but i didn't. the engine came from the salvage yard without it. lucky for me my parts car has one. tightening the bottom threads with the engine in the car was a real beetch. a shorter wrench would have been nice. but i got it, at least enough to make it quiet. we'll see.

 

but here's the question. i have been letting the car idle for 30 - 40 minutes a day for several days to loosen up any sticky valves and stuff. but it never threw a code, even with the open exhaust in the head and the open whatever in the intake. what's up? more info please.

 

and can i just cap / plug the 2 openings in the parts engine when i rework it. (if so what size plug?) i mean if it won't throw a code why not??? or would it throw a code at speed??

 

if i can't just plug the holes, does any one have a tube they can spare??

JCE i got a tube for you. try to remove it tomorrow, PM and/or email me your address in case i don't have it.

 

you can delete it, but you will get a code...or a couple. I could check mine and let you know exactly which ones! They are impossible to get rid of....i've even swapped in a non-EGR intake, pulled the wire at the ECU and swapped in an ECU from a car without EGR....still get the codes. i'd love for you to figure it out but hate to see you waste your time.

 

in WV the CEL is meaningless for inspection so it doesn't matter for me.

i checked the part numbers, it looks like the ej22 and the ej25 use the same one.

They actually do safety inspections in WV? :lol:

CEL doesn't mean anything in Va either. At least not where I am, dunno about up north. But it will fail emissions with it on.

 

EGR faults are mostly "two trip", except wiring things. If the car never moved it didn't complete a "trip" so it probably never noticed there was anything wrong.

 

I guess it depends on what you plan to put the other engine in. If you put it in a 95 non-egr car I can't imagine it would know the valve was missing. These things aren't that smart! :lol:
