Interchangability of Air Flow Meter 99 Legacy

Recommended Posts

Hello, I am new to the world of Subarus so please bear with me. I have 1999 Subaru Legacy 2.2L, Automatic with a bad Air Flow Meter. My question is: I have a #22680 AA29A meter and all I can find used is the AA160, AA290 or others. Are these air flow meters interchangeable or MUST I use a 22680 AA29A? Any help is appreciated.

Welcome to the USMB

From what I've found, the A MAF is different. I couldn't tell you what the difference is. I found some remarks in the parts book C0 & U0. Not exactly sure what that means though. It may refer to the Federal vs. California cars.

I found this document and it appears to confirm the fact they are different MAFs.

However, if you wanted to give one a shot, the 22680AA160 MAF is what is on all the other Legacies of that vintage.

Hi,

I found This LINK that shows the '99 was an odd year for the MAF sensor. The 2.2/EJ22 Legacy and the EJ22/EJ25 Impreza/Forester used your 22680AA29A.

But they were also used by:

2002-2000 Infiniti G20

2001-2000 Infiniti I30

2001-2000 Nissan Maxima

2001-2000 Nissan Sentra 2.0 Liters

Which means you may find one @ a local used parts/wrecking yard.

Also, there was a recall on the MAF sensors on the Forester - maybe on the Legacy, too....check this LINK. I'd call your local Subaru dealer, tell them your VIN # and see if the recall has been taken care of.

also check www.car-part.com . their interchange software is good for most things.

they show that you can use one from any legacy 90 - 99.

Their interchange got it wrong this time. The plug is different, the mount is on the other side and its closer to a 2.5L 2000-2004 and up Outback style one than anything else Subaru.
