00 Sub Forest, Scanners, Codes, ABS, Valves

OK so our forest is tossing codes

having it scanned at Autozone

----------

OK so the ABS light has come on, gone off a few times but back on.

Autozone says they can't scan the ABS codes for some reason and it will cost $60 for Belltire to do it.

Will a $100 store bought scanner do the ABS and all, saving some money in the long run? Or will it be limited just like the handheld autozone is using???

---------

near 190,000 miles n will probably have it forever, just now starting to need attention.

Dunno about these engines, what's the rules on it for when the valves should ever be adjusted, or left alone.

Just a regular hand held scanner won't get you into the ABS diagnostics. A good Snap On scanner or something of the like might be able to but I'm not positive. My MT2500 won't. The only thing I can tell you for sure that works is the Subaru Select Monitor.

How To read ABS Codes

Symptom: Your ABS light is on.

The following information is not applicable to all OWBs and may only be applicable to OBD-II capable (96 and above).

In order to obtain the ABS codes you will have to use the ABS diagnostic terminal under the dashboard.

Step 1) Locate the ABS terminal under the dashboard under the steering wheel. It might be REALLY hidden, so take a long look. It looks like this:

Step 2) Take the two probes that are tapes to the ABS terminal and put them in positions 3 and 6. To find positions 3 and 6 look here:

Step 3) Turn the car to ON (not the engine, just the power)

Step 4) The ABS light is going to flash. Record the numbers of flashes.

Step 5) Unplug the ABS terminal
