Caboobaroo
I've built a couple harnesses for '81 Brats. What sort of issue are you having?
sube101
well i am curently running a 79 brat harness in my 81 because the harness for the 81 took a ************. lights wouldnt work, blinker and stuff worked backwards and the tack wouldnt work also. i just wanna rebuild the whole thing possibly out of a slightly bigger gauge and to make sure every thing is right i want a witing diagram. would make things easier. sube1o1
Gloyale
That could be a tall order. Even the FSM's for that year had very poorly drawn and labeled diagrahms. And they weren't detailed about every wire color and connector like the newer diagrahms. Maybe you should focus on making repairs to ciruits that aren't functioning. Limit the scope to what you need to fix, rather than a wholesale remake of the loom.....which would be VERY tough to do.
sube101
i noticed the poor drawing for my 79 when i installed a different ignition lock cylinder. i had to trace the wires myself to get them right because it wasnt accurate on some of the colors. but i dont know where to start because there was alot wrong with it. and its been out of the brat for a few months so i dont remember all the issues. i know it'll be quite the chore. i tried to find antother harness for sale but had no luck. and my 79 harness is missing sensor wires and plugs so it works but not the best. skishop69
Best thing to do with that IF you are going to build one, is this. Take the whole mess to a Subie dealership and ask them if you can go through their terminal selection to find the right ones for all the different connectors. (a GM dealer would work too as I have noticed many of our terminals are the same as the older Subes) Get yourself a terminal removal tool, correct crimpers, a sh*tload of wire in multiple colors and a soldering iron. Lay out the old harness and remove one terminal at a time. Crimp on a new terminal to a new wire then solder to make sure it's secure. (An unseen poor crimp can wreak havoc and make you pull your hair out trying to find a problem.) Follow that original wire to it's other terminal and crimp the correct new terminal to the new wire and plug it in. Repeat for the rest of the harness. Be sure to have at least two extra of each type of terminal. Probably a good idea to have a bottle of Captain Morgan (or some such equivalant) at hand as well. Restringing and building harness' from scratch is frustrating.
sube101
thanks. know a good place to that many different wire colors?
skishop69
Order online. You'll have to do a search for automotive wire. No one I know (local) carries more than 4, maybe five colors.
