ive got a 91 wagon with forester gr2s, and big tires, no lift otherwise.

 

when loaded with weight or i hit a big bump, tires kiss body

not a big deal, and it doesnt happen enough to care about, but i am planning a 3k mile drive with the whole family and gear- so it will happen frequently

 

on my trucks ive added a simple air shock, add air= increased carrying capacity

 

i want to do the same to teh legacy-

like weld on mounts to the lower a arm, and make a bracket at teh body to hold teh other end. anyone done something similar?

if you hit a big bump and it bottoms out then it sounds like something is wrong with the suspension. is there any hope of properly adjusting/tweaking the suspension?

 

some early legacy's came with an air suspension that is self leveling. those struts would swap right in and would be easy to add a fitting to fill them with compressed air.

 

i have the opposite on one of my XT6's right now - air suspension up front and rear coil overs. others have done different variations as needed. you could even install the compressor (front drivers side fender is stock location on the XT6 and probably the legacy) and run a toggle switch to just control the height yourself.

its not bottoming out, i have 225 70 16s on it...big rump roast tire

 

it rubs the rear bumper

 

i want to add air shocks to provide more capacity during loaded periods, to prevent this from happening.

 

all the suspension is BRAND new, i just chose to install a very large tire with minimal lift

You can get air bag to do the same thing, they would go inside the springs.

what springs?

in the main springs??....theres a strut rod in there

 

 

if i had 1 inch spacers for the strut tops it would probably be ok

i still want air springs for adjustability though....ill go into engineer mode tommorow and finger it out:grin:

If you did that, you'd need to gut out the original struts or something, otherwise your rear end will be hopelessly overdampened. That could be very dangerous.

 

An easier way would be to use old worn out struts and shocks -- then the sum of the damping might be about right.

ok- nipper hit the nail on the head, theer just plain is no room for a finger, let alone roon for me to finger it out>

 

so- who, if anyone, makes a strut top spacer?

 

 

some one make a 1" spacer, i think a set of 4?, cost 245$.

 

the link was posted on here. i'd google legacy strut lift spacers.

 

is the forester rear strut as long a an outback rear strut??

 

i hear forester springs on outback struts will lift it a little in the rear, i think i remember reading that.

i looked at subtle- i know they will work in the front, but not sure, but i dont think they will work in the rear

they should, lots of folks have put outback struts on 91 legos. but if your tire is rubbing the strut they will not help. if the tire is rubbing the car body, it will give yyou another 1".

 

where is it rubbing??

it just barely kisses the mud flap on severe loading...like i hit a speed hump doing 45mph

 

but that will increase when i put the whole family and gear in it

 

i don't think GTs come with mud flaps, remove them.

 

it may be cheaper to change the tires than to lift the car.

Scott and others on here make lift kits, SJR is Scotts and I like my lift kit i bought from him. He had to sort of custom make me a set and it's fantastic. I'm sure he'd just get you a 1" (or whatever you want) rear lift for your struts assuming they do the same strut top extensions.

well, the car is lifted a little, i have forester struts and front springs, as well as forester trailing arms

 

everything works perfectly, and im quite happy with how it sits, i dont really want to go any higher

 

the issue was-slight rubbing under severe bumps- most of the time not a big deal- what i wanted to prevent was the whole family and gear in the car-it would have happened alot more, and pissed me off. the rubbing was only in the last 25% of suspension travel., but when loaded would have been far more noticable

 

problem solved now, i could put a larger tire on now with no issues
