sub brat 84
hello every one. this is my winter project. i am going to swap a engine and transmission and related componets out of a 95 impreza into a 84 brat turbo. i know that i will need to make some custom crossmembers and have a driveshaft made and i need to thin out the wiring harness from the impreza. i will also need to get a peddle box from a MT EA subaru and put that in with some modifications to take the cable from the EJ car. my questions are; should i use the wiring out of the impreza and the ECU? or should i get the wiring and ECU out of a 96 leg outback the OBII type? also if i want to do a 5lug swap later i will need custom axles? i will post pictures asap
idosubaru
i'd go with OBDII management. I'd get an entire intake manifold off an OBDII EJ22. bolt the EJ22 intake manifold onto the EJ18 and use the OBDII stuff from there. The EJ18 manifold is bulkier and not as common. be careful with 96 legacy outback - that can be an EJ25 or EJ22. in that year only a MT will be EJ22 and an automatic will be EJ25 and the MT will likely not have EGR. you'll want to retain your EGR set up if you don't want a check engine light, i believe california is insanely picky about that? i swapped a non-EGR EJ22 intake onto my EJ18 and there's no work around for the check engine light but it doesn't matter in my state. bratsrus1
Hi This is Jerry, thats a good point on the obd2 but the EJ 1.8 wiring harrness is alot simpler and alot less wiring. I have bolth set ups and the 1.8 is alot cleaner not as much wire to deal with. Also i use the 1.8 exhaust Y pipe and cat it fit in my 85 hatch. Want to know more call me 1-509-952-2855 Thanks Jerry
idosubaru
jerry - what is more complicated about the wiring? is it removing it from the donor car, or actually more wiring at the intake, body side or all of the above? other than the knock sensor the EJ18's and EJ22's have nearly the same sensors i thought. crank, cam, TPS, MAF, CTS.... when i installed my EJ18 i just added the knock sensor and everything else was basically the same. MilesFox
you can use the impreza front hubs for the 5 lug setup-using custom axles. the workaround for this is to chop in some ea82 lower control arms, or at least the mounting point on the crossmember, to use xt6 or bored out ea82 control arms to have a track wide enough for un-modified non-custom (stock) axles. The trick to that is relocating the mount back behind the existing since the ea82 control arm curves forward whereas the ea81 is straight. this will make the front track wider than the front. you would be able to use wheel spacers to correct this in the rear, and use xt6 rear hubs for the 5 lugs. you can also retrofit ea82 rear trailing arms if you want to go with a rear swaybar, if you narrow it a few inches. sub brat 84
Well today I started the brat. At first every thing seemed fine but after about five seconds the engine runing to the max. The engine was running like that untill i unhooked the battery. the thing ran like a dirtbike on its side. And there is a hole in the gas tank that is leaking, so have to fix that. The setup I am using is an EJ18 and AWD from a 95 impreza. I will try to post some pictures of the car later this week.
