97 Leggy Air Filter question

Recommended Posts

Looking to put a K&N in the Soob and was thinking of going with a universal cone style and ditching the intake box and was wondering if I'd be better off just getting the standard type and keeping the box? Also, is the MAF sensor necessary or could I get rid of all that stuff?

Sorry for the basic question, but I'm new to modding/customizing.

Thanks!

Look at the OE air box... you do not need to buy a cold air intake for it! its just pointless, buy a WIX air filter and call it good, K&N will not give you added power in your car. The original air box is pretty big, so just change your air filter. I used a K&N in my 97 2.2 and it really didn't do any good, and I think my mileage may have dropped, 2 years running WIX filters and no problems.

The MAF is 100% necessary. You can't remove that without major driveability problems.

You have to buy an adapter to mount a filter to the MAF sensor if you want a cone style filter.

A drop in filter is simple and gives better performance than a cone style with no extra work necessary.

However, there are tons of cases where oil type filters cause problems because of the oil. It gets all over the MAF sensor and screws it up. Usually cleaning fixes it, but in some cases it completely ruins the sensor.

Gotta learn somewhere, at least you're asking questions before tearing something apart and possibly destroying it. :)

don't remove the MAF, again pointless, if your looking for power, and I'm assuming you have a 2.2 then buy yourself some torque cams and call it good, otherwise your wasting your time and money on a car with assuming over 140k on it. Welcome to the board:)

if you ever replace a ''dirty'' air filter in one of these cars you will see that the dirty are is in one circular area, offset from center. even when they are dirty, there is perhaps 40% of clean filter still unused. this leads me to believe that the box and filter are not the limiting part of the system.

stick with what you have.

if you want to spend money on your car, i have a bottle of "SPECIAL"" winter tire air that i will sell you for cheap. just let me know if you are interested.

if you change it and there is a noticeable dirty ring, then perhaps changing it more often will help, I have never seen this "ring" but I also change mine every few months, just for the hell of it.

how right you are. this was on a car i bought with bad head gaskets. it is now a car with a 2.2L swap.

I notice that too, and just turn the filter so the dirty side is at the other end.

LOL, I do that too!

I thought I was the only one that did that. Guess not :)

Praise Subaru for the 2.2, why they discontinued it is beyond me, they had something good going for them.

As Jeremy Clarkson would say...

"Powaaaaaaaaa!"

Right after I get my new muffler bearings paid off:D

Pretty much what I thought, I'll stick with my Frams and call it good. Just more $ to go for the lift kit and lights.........

thanks all!!:)

I love to 2.2. Had 1.8s in my last 3 Soobs and the 2.2 is just as solid, but with better power. Runs like a top.
