I have 05 Impreza RS. The transmission was recently rebuilt and now the parking pall won't engage when you put it in park. The tranny guy said it was because the ignition is messed up. (I have to start it with a button installed as a temp fix.) So the question is, does the parking pall get engaged electronically and does the ignition have anything to do with it?

the parking pall is a metal rod, pretty long.

It can get out of place when you separate the tailshaft, like when you rebuild the clutch packs.

 

The parking pall is NOT electronic, its a rod, and when it goes out of place, you need to separate the tailshaft of the rear output from the front diff.

 

You need to go back and demand they fix it.

i have accidently put one together and the little spring clip holding it into slot fell out of place.

ITs not hard to get it wrong.

Its way easy to fix, many many labor units involved though.

they goofed up.

 

but, check your electrical plugs going to the tranny first. If they are not seated firmly, you can get same type result not going into park or out of park etc.

been there too.

Yes it is definitely going back, but one question, if the parking pall is not activated electronically, then why should I check the electrical plugs?

That has me confused too. Isn't the parking pawl actuated mechanically by the selector shaft?

I know the shifter lock mechanism frequently causes problems getting out of park, never heard of that preventing it from going into park though. And that isn't even on the transmission. :confused:

 

Cable adjustment might be an issue?

See I know there are transmissions these days that have electronic actuators. I drive them almost every day. BMW, Mercedes, but Subaru doesn't have anything even similar to those as far as I know. And at that, I'm pretty sure they just use a solenoid to move the shift selector on the outside of the transmission. Which is what the cable from the shift handle inside the car does.

Toyota uses a different type of setup in their hybrids, but that's much more complicated since there isn't really a "transmission" on those. There's still a parking pawl, and it's operated electronically, but it's nothing like what goes on inside a 4EAT.

After driving the car today (my fiance' has had it) I discovered that the tanny is a MB3, not the 4EAT originally suggested. The parking pawl does engage as long as the key is on. As soon as the key is turned off it disengages. I have another thread on this forum about my ignition problems.
