brionna_742024
I have a 1987 Subaru GL. When I drive it has a knocking type noise that speeds up with my speed. I checked the CV Joints and they feel and look good. I'm too cheap to take it to a shop and usually I have no problem with basic mechanics but this whole independent suspension stuff has got me all thrown off. She's my first Soobie and I'd like to keep her on the road. Thanks for any and all help. Sorry if I sound like a noob. I swear I'm not typically but Soobies seem to be their very own breed. 987687
Does it stop, or change when you put it in 4wd? When my driveshaft was going out the clunking sound went away when I was in 4wd because the driveshaft has different force on it when it's being driven. It would come back if I stepped on it on a slippery surface, but the fact that going into 4wd changed the noise lead me to the driveshaft.

Luckily I found a place that sold special replacement universal joints since Subaru said there was no fix except a complete new driveshaft. Kind of pain to put them in, but worked out fine. Subaru has the originals staked in. I later found out muy 79 Datsun 280ZX has the same staked-in joints.
