brycarp
Hi All, I've seen threads here about seal replacement, but I don't think I've seen specifics on driving in the new seal. I'm using a full kit from "The Import Experts" on EBay that comes with all seals, so I'll be doing the front main and both cam seals. This is on a '96 Impreza OBW with EJ22. Do people just use a deep socket that's the closest to the O.D. of the seal they can come up with? (Of course when you're installing over a shaft that's in place, ya gotta leave room for it.) I'm willing to buy the specific deep sockets to get it done right, if that's the best way to go. Thanks! Bry
MilesFox
I used a throwout bearing to install a front seal once. it was ugly, but it worked.
davebugs
Take your seals (crank and a cam) to the hardware store and get a PVC coupler. One coupler will work for crank and cam seals.
idosubaru
what he said about the PVC coupler. for the crank seal i drive it in while the oil pump is off the car. you're not *supposed* to do it that way but i've always done it that way with no issues. i've used sockets before but i forget what size and engines/seals it works for. Ionlyhave3suubs
A 32mm Socket works for this and doubles as a socket to take the axle nuts off! The PVC is less likely to mar your metal surfaces though. I use the 32mm, just because I already have it and don't already have the PVC. My socket is a standard depth craftsman 12 pt socket. A deep well socket is not necessary. Whatever you use, be careful not to drive them in too far. Look at the depth they are before pulling them out.
