85 Brat accelerator lag

Recommended Posts

I recently joined the family of Brat owner awesomeness but my Brat needs a little work... I have full intentions of replacing the original Carb with a Weber as I have been having some carb issues. One of these being that when I step on the gas I experience a ton of lag before the old girl starts going, some times even feels as though she's gonna stall out. Is this a symptom of a bad carb? Or will I still be experiencing this after I replace my carb? Any insight on this issue would be infinitely appreciated.

Symptoms:

- RPMs drop to almost 0 when I initially apply pressure to the gas pedal, then it fires up and away I go

- When I am already moving, even at speeds around 40, and I hit the gas it almost stalls out before I begin accelerating

Thanks for all of everyone's help!

Probably an accelerator pump issue on the carb. I seem to recall it is fairly common for the pump's seal to leak. A quick check would be to pull the air cleaner cover, look down the throat of the carburetor (preferably when the engine is off; singed eyebrows are SOOO last Millenium!), and work the throttle a few times to see if you can see gas squirt out of the pump nozzle.

An alternate way to check is to start with a warm-ish engine, turn it off, pump the throttle pedal a dozen times or so, and see if the car starts normally. If it does, then the pump isn't working very well if at all. If the engine acts like you have flooded it with gas, then forget everything that I have typed and listen to someone else.
