violet12877 Posted December 30, 2010 Share Posted December 30, 2010 I recently became a owner of my first Subaru. But it has problems. Its throwing 2 codes. P0500 and P1101. Ive got the 1101 taken care of, in so much as i have the correct part. now when it comes to the 0500, which i'm told is the speed sensor, I have a couple of questions. I went the auto parts store and they told me that my car has 3 sensors. After a couple of days I opened my repair manual and started reading and the manual tells me that I have 2 sensors. One in the transaxle and the other is somewhere behind the instument panel. Who should I follow the store or the book. And how do I know which one the change. or do I have to change all of them. The car dies all the time, even when driving down the highway. The speedodometer works fine. So I believe the one i need to change is the one in the transaxle, if I am following the book. VSS1 is the one in the transmission, while VSS2 is the one used by the speedometer. If your speedo works, it's likely VSS1. johnceggleston Posted January 4, 2011 Share Posted January 4, 2011 the front speed sensor is an easy replacement item. but i'm not sure it is the cause if the speedo works. although i have heard that the ECU will use the rear for speed info if the front one fails. but i didn't / don't think it will operate the speedo. i guess there is also a possibility that that the connections between the speedo and the ecu have some problem. the rear speed sensor is a simple device, no moving parts and has to be wire spliced in, no easy wire connections. i guess there is the chance of a failure, but i doubt it. a broken wire is more likely in my mind. but i don't really know. manauls only have one speed senor. just a guess. my guess is the front sensor or speedo / instrument cluster connections.
